On Oct. 15, Colby honored remarkable figures from campus history by dedicating two houses in its newest residential complex on Mayflower Hill.

The Charlie Bassett House recognizes the influential American studies and English professor who spent three decades inspiring generations of students. The Igarashi House honors Peter Igarashi ’44, who persevered through wartime internment to become Colby's first Japanese American graduate before embarking on a distinguished career as a Fulbright Scholar, professor, and minister.

For people with synesthesia, sensory experiences can blend together—causing colors to have smells or words to have tastes.

Sophia Hausladen ’27, a pre-med chemistry and Spanish double major, identified a critical research gap: the lack of a standardized synesthesia test. With mentorship and grant funding from Colby’s Halloran Lab for Entrepreneurship, Hausladen hired Tín Nguyen ’28 to turn her research into a working application. Her goal is to make synesthesia testing accessible to researchers and the public, advancing memory research worldwide.

Artificial intelligence can draft an essay in seconds, but deciphering 15th-century handwriting still requires human expertise.

Colby English professor Megan Cook is part of a team that received a $300,000 National Endowment for the Humanities grant to lead a multi-institutional effort to transcribe and catalog more than 100,000 lines of poetry by 15th-century writer John Lydgate. Using her pattern-recognition expertise, Cook and her team are reconstructing the poet's legacy for the next generation of scholars.

An exciting new addition is coming to the Colby campus in early 2027. Located on the ground floor of Charlie Bassett House in Colby’s new residential complex, The Miller’s Table at Colby will bring a locally sourced, farm-to-table dining experience to the heart of Mayflower Hill.

The café will feature breads and pastries made from freshly milled, Maine-grown grains, along with sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee, and seasonal offerings. Read more at https://brnw.ch/21x6d3g
