In collaboration with Soros Justice Fellows Catherine Besteman and Brandon Brown and Maine Restorative Justice Coalition (MERJ), we are thrilled to be co-sponsoring a 4 day training retreat in September, focused on restorative justice in cases of serious harm involving adults. This retreat will take place on Colby College's Allen Island. Training will be provided by Dolphy Jordan and Karena Montag from the Seattle-based organization, Collective Justice.

This is a very special opportunity to participate in building new and much needed pathways in Maine to address serious harm with restorative justice processes-- processes that offer genuine accountability and healing.

Apply to join us! Applications are open to Maine-based community members. The deadline to apply is July 15th!

If interested, please fill out our online application form: https://lnkd.in/eqDvRV-h

We look forward to being in community and building these pathways for restorative justice, in response to serious harm involving adults, together.

BIG week ahead with the first of OUR MPAC bills, LD 648 - An Act to Expand the Supervised Community Confinement Program, scheduled for Public Hearing this Wednesday, April 23 at 1 pm in the Criminal Justice and Public Safely (CJPS) Committee.

We hope that you will participate in supporting this bill, finding others to help, and having conversations with your legislators about why it’s important.

Why is it important? Supervised Community Confinement (SCCP) is a program to allow select residents, who apply and are approved, to serve the last 24-30 months of their incarceration in the community, being closely supervised.

This bill seeks to also make a specific group of residents, those whose crime was committed before they were 26 years old AND have served at least 15 years of their sentence eligible to apply. We do not know how many will be immediately eligible to BEGIN the application process but there are fewer than 90 that may currently or ultimately be eligible to apply.

IF approved, these residents could remain supervised on SCCP for the rest of their sentence if they continue to be productive members of their communities. If not, like anyone else on SCCP, they could be returned to prison.

This Sunday, April 20th at 1:30pm, hear from Maine Humanities Program Coordinator, Meghan Reedy and Jon Courtney of Shelf Life on the Justice Radio talk-show on WMPG FM! Meghan and Jon were interviewed by MacKenzie Kelley and Linda Small. We are so excited to hear this conversation about books, reading, and discussions inside Maine's prisons.

Justice Radio is a talk-show that tackles hard questions about our criminal legal system in Maine. How do we actually envision justice? Does our current criminal legal system provide justice? Do prisons and jails keep us safe? What should accountability and repair look like in the wake of harm? How do people releasing into communities cope with the overwhelming adjustment to technology changes, finding housing and work, and building relationships? Our rotating hosts will offer an ongoing 4-week cycle of shows that address these and other questions through moderated conversations with leaders in the field of criminal justice, abolitionist organizers, justice-impacted people, and other experts and community members.

We are immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to lead a convening workshop session at the 'Restorative Justice in Cases of Serious Harm' convening that took place at Colby College on April 5th. We thank everyone who helped to organize the convening and who came and participated in the convening's sessions. We thank you all especially for listening to our stories as survivors of serious harm who support restorative & transformative processes being made accessible as options for all, and for engaging in our session's participatory community engagement pieces.

One part of our session included the creation of a word cloud, in response to the question: "What are you most needing when you have been harmed or have caused harm?" It is striking to see the answers, many of which can't be parsed apart from the lens of either having caused or experienced harm, demonstrating that the needs of all parties in response to harm often have common threads and great similarity. Some words that stood out, as they were entered multiple times by participants, are: empathy, time, space, acknowledgement, support, communication, community, listening, & understanding.

We extend an invitation to think about and imagine: How might increased accessibility to restorative & transformative justice processes create the conditions to provide these needs?

Action alert! 🌱 Testimonials needed! Bill LD 648 An Act to Expand the Supervised Community Confinement Program will be heard on Wednesday April 23rd at 1:00 pm and is scheduled to take place at the Maine State House in Room 436 in Augusta.

This is an opportunity for us, survivors of harm, affected community, and allies, to make our voices heard loud and clear that we are in support of bills like this, as we know that incarceration and longer sentences do not equate to justice and instead cause greater harm to our communities.

Please join us in providing testimonials in support of LD 648! And please share this post to amplify this call to action.

You can learn more about this bill by visiting: https://legislature.maine.gov/backend/App/services/getDocument.aspx?documentId=110620

We thank you in the spirit of prioritizing healing first for everyone!
