Founded in 1998, the Maine International Film Festival (MIFF) is a project of the Maine Film Center. The 10 days of the festival showcase nearly 100 films, representing the best of American independent and international cinema, and spotlight some of Maine and New England’s most exciting and innovative filmmakers. This year, the Oak Institute for Human Rights is excited to be a sponsor of the New Rwandan Cinema program. Borne of a professional exchange developed between MIFF and the Mashariki African Film Festival (MAFF) in Kigali, Rwanda, this program will welcome two Rwandan feature filmmakers and the director of MAFF, who will also curate a selection of new short films.

Check out the MIFF website for more information and to purchase tickets!

Please join the departments of History and American Studies, The Center for Arts and Humanities, The Oak Institute for Human Rights, and Dr. Benjamin Madley, for a presentation of his new book An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe, 1846-1873.

The first full account of the government-sanctioned genocide of California Indians under United States rule, An American Genocide has been widely praised as groundbreaking, raising fundamental questions about how Californians and Americans think of themselves and their history.

Between 1846 and 1873, California's Indian population plunged from perhaps 150,000 to 30,000. Madley is the first to uncover the full extent of the slaughter, the involvement of state and federal officials, indigenous resistance, who did the killing, the taxpayer dollars that supported it, and why the killings ended. This deeply researched book is a comprehensive history of an American genocide.

Benjamin Madley is Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. He studies Native America, the United States, and colonialism in world history. He holds a B.A., M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Yale University and an M.St. from Oxford University.
