Waterville has HOPE

Waterville has HOPE The primary goal of Operation HOPE is to place those suffering from substance abuse disorder into residential treatment facilities. What is Operation HOPE?

This is only funded by donations that go fully to placements. If you wish to make a donation go to http://bit.ly/2ER0FQo Operation HOPE – He**in Op**te Prevention Effort – is a fundamental operational philosophy focusing on enforcement, education, and treatment. Treatment is the primary focus of the operation as the Waterville Police Department will attempt to place each individual who presents at

the police department asking for help into a residential treatment facility. Operation HOPE is modeled after the Gloucester, Massachusetts ANGEL program and more locally the Scarborough Police Department Operation HOPE program. We are partnered with the Police Assisted Addiction Recovery Initiative (PAARI) in order to place folks into one of the 300 PAARI partnered rehabilitation facilities around the country. Our local partners include KVCAP, our fiscal agent, Discover House of Central Maine, Maine General Medical Center, and Healthy Northern Kennebec. How does Operation HOPE work? An individual suffering from substance abuse disorder (op**te addiction) presents at the police department and goes through a basic screening process. They may turn in drugs and drug paraphernalia at this time without charges. After screening is complete the individual will be set up with a volunteer Angel to help with the placement process. What is a Volunteer Angel? A volunteer angel is a community volunteer who will come to the police department and assist the individual suffering from substance abuse disorder with placement or outside referrals if placement becomes impossible. The angel will be trained in both the dynamics of substance abuse disorder and the specifics of the Waterville HOPE program. They will be familiar with our partners and all available options for the individual participant. The angels will be the back bone of our program helping us help the community. Who are our coordinators? Officer Robert Bouley, Officer Chase Fabian, Off Linda Smedberg and Officer Ryan Dinsmore coordinate the program which is administered by Deputy Chief William Bonney. Good Afternoon Waterville,

It has been quite some time since our musicians, who volunteer to provide an amazing yearly Musicians for HOPE Concert, have been able to get together and play songs for you folks. The band, aptly named the Hopefuls, is comprised of local musicians who believe deeply in helping their community. We are but one of the beneficiaries of their hard work and dedication.

I am very excited to announce that you will have the opportunity to see the Hopefuls on the 4th of July, not once, but twice. They will be performing on the OPERATION HOPE float in the Central Maine 4th of July Celebration Parade in Clinton and they will be performing at the Clinton Fairgrounds at 1PM on the 4th of July.

We will also have HOPE Angels walking with the float. They love to talk about the program, speak of successes, and accept donations so we can continue to help those suffering from substance use disorder.

Lest we forget, while we all celebrate a safe, and happy 4th of July, 504 Mainers died from overdose in 2020, a 33 % increase over 2019. Those Mainers are not here to celebrate with us today and if we can save a life and help turn this trend downward we are happy to do so...but we can't do it alone. We are all in this together.

See you on the 4th, enjoy the day, enjoy the parade, and help us make a difference.
