How does a business in Watertown or across South Dakota take its products to the global stage? 🌎🤝

A big thank-you to Ezra Hunter and Watertown’s own Missy Sinner from South Dakota Trade for joining Watertown Rotary to share how they are connecting local businesses with international markets!

Since launching in 2023 as a 501(c)(6) public-private partnership, South Dakota Trade has been a powerhouse for our state’s economy:

📈 32,000–33,000 South Dakota jobs positively impacted by exports
🌐 10 business-led trade missions executed & 20+ international delegations hosted (from Japan, Australia, and the Netherlands to Ireland!)
💼 $186,000 in federal STEP grants secured to help small and medium-sized businesses expand into new markets—generating up to a 28x return on investment
🎓 100+ business professionals trained through "New to Export" education.

As Missy shared with our club, international trade is all about building trust, relationships, and bringing brand-new dollars into South Dakota’s economy. We wish Ezra, Missy, and their 15-member South Dakota delegation safe travels and great success as they head out on their upcoming trade mission to Australia! 🇦🇺✈️

Thank you to Paula for introducing our speakers and to our members for a great Q&A session!

Thank you to Watertown City Manager Alan Stager for presenting to the Watertown Rotary Club last Thursday, and to Mayor Ried Holien for the introduction!

While celebrating his 24th anniversary of moving to Watertown, Alan shared how our community offers "A to Z" amenities—from commercial air service on two carriers and an accreditation-worthy zoo to a career-staffed fire department and a leading police force—all while maintaining the lowest mill levy ($1.71) of any sizable city in South Dakota and the lowest utility rates in the region.

He also highlighted Watertown's nearly $1.3 billion in annual taxable transactions and answered member questions on the Prairie Lakes Wellness/Event Center, the Flats on Kemp, the Maas Ice Arena, street reconstruction, and local housing initiatives (including 10 new sub-$300,000 homes on the east side of town and nearly 400 multifamily units currently in the works).

We even sent him home with the coveted Rotary pen—though as Mayor Holien pointed out, we may need to order custom Rotary pencils for him next time!

Please join us in welcoming our newest Watertown Rotary member, Cliff Herzog!

Cliff was officially inducted into Rotary at our Oct. 22 meeting. After more than 50 years in the roofing business, Cliff is now retired and shares his time with his wife between Watertown and Mesa, Arizona.

We’re excited to have Cliff as part of Watertown Rotary and look forward to the fellowship and service ahead. His son, Cory Herzog, who is also a member, introduced him.

Welcome to Rotary, Cliff!
