🏊‍♂️ Making a Splash at Rotary! 🏊‍♂️

Last Thursday, our Rotary Club had the absolute privilege of hosting Chuck Baechler, the dedicated Head Coach of the Watertown South Dakota Dolphins!

Coach Chuck has been a cornerstone of swimming in South Dakota since 2001 and took the helm of our local Dolphins in the fall of 2010. During his presentation, he shared his incredible coaching journey and gave us an inside look at what makes this swim program so special for our community.

Here are a few fantastic takeaways from his presentation:

Building Character, Not Just Athletes: Coach Chuck emphasized that swimming is a highly demanding sport that teaches kids vital life skills. His athletes learn accountability, time management, how to be good teammates, and most importantly, how to bounce back from setbacks.

A Growing Swim Family: The club currently supports about 160 kids—ranging from enthusiastic 5-year-olds just getting their fins wet, all the way up to high school seniors preparing for college.

Adults Can Dive In, Too: Exciting news for our community! Coach Chuck is looking to launch an adult Masters swimming program. Whether you are a former competitive swimmer or just looking for a fantastic, low-impact workout, it will be a great way to get in the water.

We want to send a huge thank you to Coach Chuck for his time, his fantastic sense of humor, and his unwavering dedication to the youth in our community. A big shoutout also goes to the parent board and local sponsors who keep the Dolphins swimming strong!

What is your favorite way to stay active and get involved in our local sports community?

🌟 Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders! 🌟

At today’s Watertown Rotary Club meeting, we had the absolute pleasure of hearing from Molly Raasch, a 14-year-old sophomore at Watertown High School, as she shared her unforgettable experience at this year’s RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) camp in Nebraska!

From initial nerves to lifelong memories, Molly gave us a candid, funny, and deeply inspiring look at what happens when young leaders step outside their comfort zones.

💡 Key Highlights from Molly’s Presentation:
Unplugging & Connecting: Going completely phone-free for five days was daunting at first, but Molly shared that it became one of the best parts of camp—forcing real conversations, spontaneous laughs, and deep friendships with bunkmates and counselors.

The 4-Way Test (+2!): Campers put Rotary’s Four-Way Test into daily practice, along with RYLA’s two bonus questions: "Is it fun?" and "Will it be worth it if not?"

Giving Back to Watertown: Molly and fellow Watertown attendee Brooklyn designed and painted a Little Free Library as part of their service project! They chose to place it near the park by the hospital so neighborhood kids and families can enjoy free books for years to come. 📚

Unforgettable Memories: From a formal etiquette dinner followed by a dance party, to creative group skits (including putting groupmate Maddox in a dress! 😄), to impromptu gas station dance breaks on the drive home with Watertown Rotary President David Ross, RYLA was packed with fun.

Redefining Leadership: "Being a leader doesn't mean being the loudest person in the room," Molly shared. "It means listening, stepping up, learning from mistakes, and helping the people around you."

🎒 Leadership in Action at WHS
Molly isn't stopping at camp—she’s bringing those leadership skills right back home to Watertown! Beyond RYLA, she is actively involved in:

Student Council & organizing a new High School Club Fair to help freshmen get involved.

Arrow Ambassadors (volunteering in local nursing homes and helping elementary students).

Hope Squad (peer-led mental health and 988 support outreach).

👏 Thank You!

Thank you to Molly for sharing her story (and accepting the coveted Watertown Rotary Pen!), to Brooklyn for representing our community so well, and to driver Lisa and Rotary President David Ross for handling transportation to and from Nebraska!

We are so proud to sponsor young leaders like Molly and Brooklyn through RYLA. Investing in our youth is investing in the future of Watertown!

Today Rotary had the pleasure of getting a tour and presentation from Melissa Van Gilder of the newer surgical tech program.
