It's that time of year for this reminder from National Child Passenger Safety Board! Keep your kiddos warm AND safe by not using bulky coats in their car seats.

Sweater weather is officially here, and that means one more thing to check before you buckle up: removing the bulky coat before buckling the car seat. A thick coat can compress in a crash, leaving the harness too loose to do its job. Buckle and secure the harness first, then you can add the coat over the top or use it as a blanket instead. This small move can make a big difference in how well the harness can protect your rider.

We asked over 1,000 parents and caregivers about situations in which they don’t buckle their child for every ride. We found out that men were more likely than women to report sometimes or often riding with their child unrestrained, regardless of the situation asked about.

Buckling up on every ride is the single most important thing a family can do to stay safe in the car. No trip is too short to buckle up. In a crash, correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.
