We are grateful for these local partnership and the supportive funders who help make these projects happen. This stormwater wetland will have a profound water quality improvement and habitat enhancement for our community.
Planning a strong future. 💚 The City of Cedar Falls is transforming an existing detention basin into a stormwater wetland along a popular public trail in a developing part of the city. Located at the intersection of Greenhill Road and Coneflower Parkway, the Coneflower Urban Wetland is expected to treat approximately 34 million gallons of runoff annually while improving water quality, increasing vegetation diversity, enhancing wildlife habitat, creating new recreational opportunities, and reducing nutrient loads within the high-priority Dry Run Creek watershed.
ℹ️ This is an existing detention basin that will be retrofitted into a stormwater wetland. The focus will not just be controlling water quantity but also improving water and habitat quality for different animals. This includes pollinators, fish, amphibians, mammals, birds, and reptiles. The current vegetation in the basin is largely invasive, and the City plans to replace it with diverse native species that will also beautify the area. 🌼 Future potential also includes additional soft trails that will connect with the existing bike trail, helping expand the area’s recreational opportunities.
💧 While basins consistently offer flood control value, this project builds on that and serves as a tribute to how older basins can be retrofitted and newer developments can design basins that offer additional benefits to our community.
