Intellectual property’s role in innovation has deep roots. During her fireside chat at AUTM on the Road in D.C., Coke Morgan Stewart, President & CEO of the Council for Innovation Promotion, connected today’s innovation policy conversations to the longstanding role of patents in creating opportunity.

“It was discussed in the first State of the Union that President George Washington delivered, it was one of the four principles in our founding documents in the Constitution, and the Patent Act was passed in 1790. So we talk about what's durable. I can't help but think that we have 200 plus years of, you know, a basic agreement that the incentives created by the IP system are foundational to the U.S. economy and, frankly, to economic freedom for individuals in the U.S.”

At AUTM on the Road in D.C., fireside chat speaker Coke Morgan Stewart, President & CEO of the Council for Innovation Promotion, emphasized the importance of helping policymakers understand the full commercialization process, including the early work that might not produce an immediate return.

"We do have people in the administration who have a very business-oriented mindset, and so it's an opportunity and a challenge for us to be able to explain what that life cycle is and how it goes from research to IP protection to you know investment commercialization and it's a very fragile system and a lot of work has to be done on the front end that doesn't always bear fruit and so anything we can do to support that system and anything we can do to minimize instability or disincentivize people to participate.”
