For patients diagnosed with glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer, treatment options have long been limited and outcomes devastating.

A breakthrough therapy developed from research at Baylor College of Medicine is helping change that narrative. Diakonos Oncology’s investigational dendritic cell therapy, DOC1021, trains a patient’s own immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells, showing promising results in clinical trials and offering new hope for patients facing this challenging disease.

Today, AUTM joined colleagues and partners at NIST headquarters to celebrate the unveiling of a portrait honoring Walter Copan, who served as Director of National Institute of Standards and Technology from 2017–2021.

A longtime champion of American innovation, Dr. Copan has played a significant role in advancing the research, technology transfer, and innovation ecosystem. Today, he continues that work alongside Andrei Iancu through the Renewing American Innovation initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The ceremony was especially meaningful as NIST celebrates its 125th anniversary. AUTM Advocacy and Alliances Coordinator Mike Waring was honored to join others in recognizing Dr. Copan's lasting contributions to science, research, and innovation.
