Today, March 16, is Black Press Day. Today we honor the founding of Freedom’s Journal, the first African American owned and operated newspaper in the United States. Established in New York City in 1827 by Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm, the paper boldly declared, “We wish to plead our own cause,” and helped lay the foundation for the Black press. 📰✊🏾

Today we honor Black Press Day on March 16th marking the historic launch of Freedom’s Journal, the first African American owned and operated newspaper in the United States. Founded in New York City on March 16, 1827, by Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm, the publication was created to challenge racist narratives, advocate for abolition, and highlight the achievements and voices of the Black community.

With its powerful declaration, “We wish to plead our own cause,” Freedom’s Journal set the foundation for nearly two centuries of Black journalism dedicated to truth, advocacy and community empowerment.

Today, we celebrate the legacy of the Black Press and the journalists, publishers and storytellers who continue the mission of informing, uplifting and protecting our communities. 📰✊🏾
