is finally here and it's time for our first feature of the 2027 cohort!
Maya Dunson is a third-year medical student at The Ohio State University College of Medicine with a passion for advancing health equity through clinical care, research, and policy advocacy. She holds a Master of Public Health from Valparaiso University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Loyola University Chicago, and is driven to advocate for underserved communities through reproductive justice, population health disparities research, and public health policy & initiatives.
Currently, Maya’s experiences include research in gynecologic oncology and maternal health, leadership in diversity and advocacy initiatives, and hands-on community service. She has been involved with public health advocacy through testifying before the Ohio State Senate, coordinating care at her student-run free clinic, the Columbus Free Clinic, and contributing to reproductive justice initiatives through Medical Students for Choice. Maya is also engaged in organizational medicine through the Ohio State Medical Association and American Medical Association Medical Student Sections, helping to advocate for policies that support and protect patients and promote health equity.
As a former Division I basketball team captain turned medical student, mentorship has remained central to Maya’s identity. She is committed to mentoring underserved youth through coaching basketball and medical school organizations, including the Student National Medical Association and Made for Medicine.
