The Southeastern Pennsylvania Cold War Historical Society was founded in 2010 by a group of motivated women dedicated to preserving the contributions of current and former residents of southeastern Pennsylvania made towards protecting the United States during the Cold War.

A homemade hot air balloon may not seem like a likely escape vehicle, but for two East German families, it was their path to freedom.

In September 1979, Peter Strelzyk and Günter Wetzel successfully flew their families across the East German border after extensive planning and multiple attempts. Their journey remains one of the most remarkable escape stories of the Cold War.
