Make a Difference in South Waco!

A little time and teamwork can make a big difference in our neighborhoods!

Our friends at Grassroots Community Development invite volunteers to join Fall Into Action, a community cleanup event that helps neighbors and improves properties in South Waco.

8:30 a.m. – Noon
South Waco

Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and no special skills or experience are needed! Participants can earn volunteer hours while giving back to their community. Breakfast will also be provided.

Hispanic Heritage Month Board Spotlight: Connie Lozano

Connie Lozano has dedicated years to strengthening neighborhoods, supporting families, and making Waco a better place to live.

As President of the Oakwood Neighborhood Association, Connie has played an important role in revitalizing the organization, bringing residents together, and encouraging greater community involvement.

Her commitment to service extends beyond Oakwood. Connie also serves as a Board Member at Large for Waco Habitat for Humanity, supporting efforts to expand housing opportunities for local families.

A former NeighborWorks Waco Board Member, Connie continues to share her experience and leadership as an Honorary Board Member, remaining a valued part of our organization.

Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Luis Guevara

For Luis Guevara, giving back to the community means serving the neighborhood he has called home for most of his life.

Born in Mexico and raised in Waco’s Oakwood neighborhood, Luis brings a deep connection to his community and a passion for service to his role on the NeighborWorks Waco Board of Directors.

Luis became involved with NeighborWorks Waco through his work with the Oakwood Neighborhood Association, where he connected with longtime community advocate and NeighborWorks Waco Honorary Board Member Connie Lozano. Encouraged to take his community involvement a step further, Luis joined the Board of Directors in 2026 as a representative of the Oakwood neighborhood.

With a strong belief in the importance of accessible housing and opportunities for homeownership, Luis is committed to helping NeighborWorks Waco continue making a meaningful difference for local individuals and families.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to recognize Luis for his dedication to community service, neighborhood advocacy and the belief that strong communities are built by people who care.

Hispanic Heritage Month Board Spotlight: Christopher Gutierrez, CCIM

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, NeighborWorks Waco is proud to recognize the Hispanic leaders who have shared their time, expertise, and commitment in service to our organization and the Waco community.

Christopher Gutierrez, CCIM, has been a longtime supporter and volunteer leader with NeighborWorks Waco, bringing his extensive experience in commercial real estate and development to help advance the organization’s work in housing and community development. Christopher is a developer and licensed commercial real estate broker whose work has included the acquisition and development of properties throughout the McLennan County region.

His service to NeighborWorks Waco has included serving as Board Chair and playing an important role in numerous projects over the years. His contributions were recognized when he was named NeighborWorks Waco’s Volunteer of the Year for fiscal year 2019.
Christopher also played an instrumental role in the development of Belmont Village, helping bring together NeighborWorks Waco and the City of Waco as the project moved forward.

His professional expertise, knowledge of the Waco community, and commitment to service have made Christopher a valued part of NeighborWorks Waco’s story.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to recognize Christopher and thank him for the time, leadership, and expertise he has contributed to NeighborWorks Waco and our community.

Credit can play an important role in your ability to qualify for a mortgage, but a low credit score or limited credit history doesn’t have to mean giving up on your homeownership goals.

NeighborWorks Waco offers Credit Counseling and Project SAVER to help individuals and families strengthen their credit and financial health. Through Credit Counseling, clients can receive a personalized credit review, credit report analysis, a customized action plan, and practical strategies for managing debt and building positive credit habits.

For eligible participants, Project SAVER provides another way to build credit through a credit-building loan, one-on-one financial coaching, and an incentive for successfully completing the repayment plan. Some participants have improved their credit scores by more than 100 points.

During National Mortgage Professionals Month, we’re highlighting the work that can happen before a mortgage application. Understanding your credit, developing healthy financial habits, and knowing what steps to take next can help you become better prepared when the time comes to explore your home loan options.

Hispanic Heritage Month Board Spotlight: Delfina Velasquez

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, NeighborWorks Waco is proud to recognize the Hispanic leaders who share their time, experience, and commitment in service to our organization and the Waco community.

For Board Member Delfina Velasquez, her connection to NeighborWorks Waco began long before she joined the Board.

In 2000, Delfina and her husband learned about a home NeighborWorks Waco was rehabilitating. After getting to know the staff and putting their trust in the organization, they began preparing to purchase the home. About seven months later, they became homeowners.

Her experience with NeighborWorks Waco eventually inspired Delfina to give back by serving on the organization’s Board of Directors.

“I know the impact the organization can have on individuals, families and communities, and I am honored to be a part of that.”

From experiencing the impact of NeighborWorks Waco as a homebuyer to helping guide its work as a Board Member, Delfina brings a unique perspective and a personal connection to the organization’s mission.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to celebrate Delfina and grateful for her continued commitment to NeighborWorks Waco and the community we serve.
