✨ A Spark of Partnership — And a New Momentum for Macoupin County ✨

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming the Macoupin County Historical Society from Carlinville, and let me tell you — the excitement in this room was real. There is something special when two organizations with the same heart for history, community, and preservation come together.

This could be the beginning of a strong, meaningful relationship between our societies. A partnership built on shared goals, shared passion, and shared belief that our past deserves to be protected while our future deserves to be inspired.

Because here’s the truth:
It only takes a spark.
A spark from one person… or one group… to start building momentum.

And that’s exactly what we’re doing.

For too long, many community organizations haven’t been the same since pre‑Covid. What they were and what they are now can feel like two different worlds. But today, we have something powerful — a group of individuals who are dedicated to change, dedicated to rebuilding, and dedicated to preserving our past while creating a legacy for our future.

This is how movements start.
This is how communities come back to life.
This is how we teach our children that getting involved, giving back, and standing for something meaningful is one of the most rewarding things they can do.

One spark becomes a flame.
One flame becomes a fire.
And together, we can build an army of doers, helpers, preservers, and believers.

Macoupin County, this is our moment.
Let’s build something unforgettable — together.

🟫 A Rare Piece of Virden History, Patented in 1894 🟫

The Route 66 Virden Historical Society is proud to share one of the most fascinating artifacts in our growing collection — an original Virden bottling crate, designed under a U.S. patent filed on April 23, 1894 by Illinois inventor Thomas Drummond of Alton.

This unique crate design was created to hold bottles upside‑down using a clever system of wooden braces, grooves, and a slotted diaphragm. Drummond’s innovation strengthened the box, kept bottles secure during transport, and represented a major improvement in beverage shipping during the late 19th century.

Today, this crate stands as a remarkable example of early Illinois craftsmanship and industrial ingenuity.

🧵 About the Artifact
This historic crate was curated by Kyle Heriford as part of his personal collection and was generously consigned to the museum for public viewing. Acquired in 2025, it now appears in our rotating exhibit at the Route 66 Virden Historical Society.
Kyle serves as both a Director of the Historical Society and our Associate Curator, helping preserve and interpret Virden’s story for future generations.

📜 Why This Crate Matters
• It connects Virden to Illinois’ early bottling and beverage industry
• It showcases a patented 19th‑century design still admired for its engineering
• It reflects the everyday tools used by local businesses over 130 years ago
• It preserves the legacy of small‑town innovation and craftsmanship

You can explore the full patent text, artifact details, and photos on our website.

Every artifact we preserve brings Virden’s history to life — one story, one object, one memory at a time.

🚗🔥 VIRDEN… WE DID THAT! 🔥🚗

What an absolutely EPIC day on our historic square. The Hot Rod Power Tour rolled through, the community showed up in full force, and the energy was unreal.

Our police officers came out, directed traffic, kept everything smooth — and yes… they even let folks do burnouts. The crowd went wild. The laughter, the cheers, the excitement — it felt like the whole town was alive.

And the part that blows my mind?
We put this entire event together in FIVE DAYS.
Five days to get the city council, the police department, the city workers, the vendors, the food truck, and the entire community on the same page. Five days to build something that ran smooth as butter and brought so much joy to our town.

I’m proud of Roots and Renewal Team. I’m proud of every single person who stepped up.
But most of all, I’m proud of Virden.

🔥 A moment we’ll never forget

Right around noon, the Special Olympics Torch Run came through — at the exact same time the classic cars were rolling in. The square was packed with people cheering, clapping, celebrating, and supporting something bigger than all of us. It was powerful. It was beautiful. It was community.

💛 Thank you, Virden

Thank you to every vendor, every family, every visitor, every car enthusiast, and every person who came out to support local and make this day unforgettable.

Special thanks to:
• A Marc Above
• Neatos Elements
• Our City Council
• Virden Police Department
• City Work Dept
• Every volunteer and vendor who showed up with heart

Virden proved once again that when we come together, we create magic.
I feel blessed to be part of this community — and even more blessed to see how quickly we can unite to make something amazing happen.

Here’s to more days like this.
Here’s to Virden Strong.
