🐾TERRIERS, YOUR WORDS COULD BE SEEN ALL ACROSS VIRGINIA!🐾

Think you can come up with a catchy slogan that gets people to drive safer? Here’s your chance to prove it! The YOVASO Youth Traffic Safety Slogan Contest is officially open, and we want William Byrd Middle School to bring home the winning slogan!

Here’s the cool part: the winning message will be displayed on VDOT interstate signs across Virginia during National Teen Driver Safety Week! That means thousands of drivers could see YOUR words! Your slogan can be funny, clever, or serious. Just make it short, memorable, and all about making safer choices on the road. And yes, you can enter more than once, so keep those ideas coming!

🚦Distracted Driving Simulator🚦

Get ready for a hands-on experience at the 2026 YOVASO Summer Leadership Retreat!

Students will participate in YOVASO's Distracted Driving Simulator that demonstrates how quickly distractions can impact focus, reaction time, and decision-making behind the wheel. This interactive experience helps bring real-world traffic safety risks to life in a way that is engaging, memorable, and eye-opening.

Walk away with a deeper understanding of how one split-second distraction can change everything and how to make safer choices every time you’re on the road.

As we head into summer break, the YOVASO crew from the Terrier Safety Squad wants to remind everyone to have fun, make memories, and most importantly…stay safe. ☀️🚴‍♂️🚗🚶‍♀️

Whether you’re:
🚲 Riding your bike around the neighborhood
🚗 Heading out on vacation or riding with friends and family
🚶 Walking to the pool, park, or store

Make smart choices every single day:
✅ Wear your helmet when riding your bike
✅ Always buckle your seatbelt — every ride, every time
✅ Stay off your phone and pay attention to your surroundings
✅ Use crosswalks and look both ways before crossing
✅ Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road
✅ Help look out for younger brothers, sisters, and friends

A safe summer is a fun summer, and we want to see every Terrier back at school next year healthy and smiling! 🧡🖤

Remember: “Good choices today can save a life tomorrow.”

💥🐾 The Terrier Safety Squad completed a post-seatbelt check this morning, and while we’re proud of the effort, the results show we still have room to grow!

86% of vehicles checked had everyone buckled up -- but we know we can (and should) do even better!! Let’s continue holding each other accountable and making seatbelt safety a priority every single trip. 💛

And with that, it’s a wrap for our “Project GPS: Get Places Safely” campaign. We hope everyone has a fun, relaxing, and SAFE summer break! ☀️🛣️

🚦🐾 The Terrier Safety Squad is back at it! 🐾🚦

For Project GPS, students took part last Friday in a powerful lunch activity that really opened their eyes - literally. Students wore vision-impairment goggles while playing co****le to simulate what it’s like to have slowed reaction time, blurred vision, and poor coordination - just like someone under the influence of alcohol.

The results? Let’s just say…it wasn’t easy! 😵‍💫

This activity helped highlight some serious facts:
❌ Alcohol can affect your vision, making it harder to judge distance and focus
❌ It slows reaction time, which is critical when driving
❌ It impairs decision-making, leading to risky choices
❌ Even small amounts can have big consequences behind the wheel

The takeaway is simple but important: Drinking and driving is never worth the risk. And it doesn’t just endanger the driver - it also puts passengers, pedestrians, and entire communities at risk.

Our students are learning that speaking up matters. If you see someone about to drive impaired, say something! You could save a life.

🚦🐾The Terrier Safety Squad kept the momentum going last Friday, getting students to think about traffic safety and how to get where they’re going safely over the summer.

During lunch, students took part in a fun activity by filling out postcards with their summer plans -- whether it’s heading to the pool 🏊‍♀️, the beach 🏖️, or a friend’s house 🏡 -- and the steps they will take to get there safely. 🚶‍♂️🚲🚗 We loved seeing the creativity and thoughtfulness put into each one!

Even some of our staff joined in on the fun and filled out postcards of their own! 😊🙌

As we look ahead to summer adventures, it’s a great reminder that whether we’re passengers, riding our bikes, or out walking, we can all take simple steps to stay safe...and encourage others to do the same. ☀️🌴💛

🐾The Terrier Safety Squad was out in full force this morning, greeting students in the car rider line with smiles and positive energy! ✨

They handed out helpful information about passenger safety and reminded everyone how important it is to speak up if something doesn’t feel right in a vehicle 🚗⚠️

If you ever feel unsafe, remember:
🚨Give reminders (e.g. remind everyone to wear their seatbelt)
🚨Provide a solution (e.g. offer to answer their phone while driving)
🚨Speak up for safety (e.g. let your parent know if something makes you feel unsafe)

🎤 Your voice matters—don’t be afraid to use it! Passenger safety begins with YOU! 💙🐾
