This week’s Soft Skill is Conflict Resolution ✨

As part of our collaboration with SYOS (Strengthening Youth Opportunities for Success) we provide soft skills programming to four other out-of-school organizations. This semester we have been running eight week courses with Cultural Arts For Excellence - CAFE and The Community Youth Program 📍

We’ve already covered
✅Listening & Speaking
✅Reading & Writing
✅Teamwork
✅Respect for Diversity
✅Customer Service
✅Big Picture Thinking

After this weeks practice in Conflict Resolution, we will wrap up with Initiative & Self Direction. And then we look forward to running through the course again in the spring with Presbyterian Community Center and West End Center For Youth, Inc. ✨

Happy we get to be a part of offering these skill building opportunities to middle schoolers in and outside of the Club, to collaborate with and learn from other orgs in the area doing great work for

We have been quiet on Facebook for a while - but we have been busy at the Club!

TODAY 4pm - 6pm we will be at the LEAP West End Market

Our Crop Culture team will be selling their pickles, apple butter, granola, and collards! 🥒 🍎

We have had a slow fall season of growing, so we have been learning more about food preservation and value added products.

Thanks to Thornfield Farm for supplying the extra cucumber, LEAP community gardens for the Hurt Park apples, Peace and Harmony Farm for the Golden Milk powder featured in our granola, and of course Local Environmental Agriculture Project - LEAP for the amazing support in our first year of business!

Its the last week for the summer program. We made carrot cake 🎂,we made a eggplant dish, we got our first cucumbers. Something I like about the summer program is the team work.

We went on a University of Virginia self-guided college tour yesterday

One teen said “it was nice, it felt like a museum, and a lot of the buildings looked the same so it was kind of confusing”

Another teen said “it was fun and it was the first college tour I’ve been on”

After eating in the dining hall all-you-can-eat buffet, one teen said “I love college!”

Big thanks to Roanoke College I.T. Department for hosting a job shadow for one of our teens today 🖥

He was able to tour multiple departments / positions within I.T. and we got to enjoy a campus lunch 😝

This teen is still set on a future within I.T. and now has a better understanding of roles that interest him, one’s that don’t, and what training and education is needed ☑️

Such a neat job shadow opportunity to learn about positions at the college and how you can pair work experience with education! ✨

This week we made a fence for our cucumbers, and watered our crops. Tuesday Christian held a program with the first graders and they did a scavenger hunt in nature.

These last couple weeks of the school year went by in a whirlwind! 🌬

We are going to catch you up with some fun & achievements over the next couple days 🤗

First off - our Youth Employment Program participants completed their nine week program ✅

We are sad to be missing two from the team in this photo - but all for good reason: summer vacations ☀️

Congrats to the six teens who took the time each week to expand their horizons, develop new skills, and create another helpful stepping stone to their bright futures! 🎉

The group got to practice soft skills, learn some financial management tips, hone in on their skills and interests, visit five different businesses representing different career clusters AND have a bonus visitor come to them at the school, participate in informational interviews, create a resume, and write a mock cover letter. Whew! Well done team! 👏

We are excited to see what’s next for these bright young people, and honored to be a part of the process ✨

Check out this story from seed to stove! 🤩

1. Youth Employment Program participants visited urban farm Garden Variety Harvests and planted collard seeds in early March

2. In early April our Crop Culture team used two of the trays of collard starts to plant a full garden bed

3. Collards were ready to pick the first week of May and we harvested 14 1/2lb bunches of collards

4. As part of this garden business program we sold our bunches to the Local Environmental Agriculture Project - LEAP mobile market

5. A happy customer bought them the next day (just one day after harvest!) and cooked them up

Congrats to our Crop Culture team on their first sale! 🥬 🎉
More collards to come, plus beets and squash coming soon!
