Yet another great example of why the public shouldn’t keep wildlife, especially racc**ns.

Raising a kit incorrectly, especially a single, then “releasing” it results in long term suffering and almost certain death. These animals spend up to a year with their mom learning how to racc**n. Where to find food, water, shelter and how to avoid/escape predators. City racc**ns even teach their babies about roads and cars.

Raising any animal in your home then releasing (dumping) it would be similar to dropping you off in a foreign country. You have no idea where to find food, water, shelter. You have no money and don’t speak the language.
What would you do?
Do you think you’d survive?
In addition to being hungry and thirsty animals face predators, resident animals and people trying to kill or trap them at every turn.

We don’t tell people not to keep that cute little baby to be mean, we’ve seen the horrendous results of their good intentions.

This sweet baby was found this morning with a large wound on its neck. Thank goodness the person reached out to us instead of the typical hysterical response to seeing a racc**n in daylight. The racc**n turned out to be surprisingly friendly and walked right into the crate. When our awesome volunteer Becky arrived the finder informed her that the neighbor had raised a baby racc**n and released it a few miles away. We can’t say with absolute certainty this is the same animal but it seems pretty likely.

If you find injured or orphaned wildlife PLEASE reach out to a LICENSED rehabber! I understand finding placement can be difficult, especially during baby season, but keep trying!
🦝 If safe to do so place the animal in a secure cage, box, tote and put it in a dark, warm, quiet location until help can be found.
🦝 DO NOT I repeat DO NOT give food or water unless directed to do so by a licensed rehabber.
🦝 Check the DNR website for a partial list of Rehabbers in your area.
🦝 Make a post on Michigan Wildlife rescue, help and education. Be sure to include your location and a photo.
🦝 Be willing to transport whenever possible. Rehabbers are few and far between in Michigan, especially those who intake racc**ns.
🦝 Please consider donating, we get zero funding from the DNR and do not get paid to provide this service to the community.

The phrase “let nature take its course” is often used as an excuse to do nothing but that inaction in a world so heavily altered by humans is unjust and inhumane.
Please be kind to our wild neighbors ❤️‍🩹

It’s taken me a few days to be able to make this post but we lost our best boy Mr. Holmes 💔
I rushed him over to our racc**n vet but sadly the X-rays showed he was already in heart failure. We also found out he had been shot twice before coming to us. 😭

Holmes was deeply loved by all of our volunteers and was the best papa c**n to our orphaned babies. He will be missed very much.
🌈💔 Rest easy on your step up there big boy

It’s been a rough past few days here at FSRR. Constantly seeing animals who are suffering never gets any easier but this week we’ve just been rolling with the punches. 🫠

🐈 Thursday I picked up a little kitten (Dorito) who was hit by a car and had been suffering for 2 days. He was having frequent seizures and was covered in fleas and poo. Thankfully we were able to get him into the vet Friday morning for an exam. His seizures are finally under control and he is the absolute sweetest little guy.

🐁 Friday morning brought us a juvenile opossum who was attacked by another animal in a Three Rivers backyard. She does have a few puncture wounds we are treating but she has a great appetite and will hopefully make a full, quick recovery.

🐁 Friday afternoon we received another call for an injured opossum, this one in Portage. I got to the house as fast as I could but sadly it was already too late. She had probably one of the worst injuries I’ve seen on an animal (and I’ve seen some horrific things!). It appeared as though she was caught by a large dog or coyote and was almost completely disemboweled.
It was AWFUL 😭.

🐈 Friday evening I received an urgent call regarding a feral cat who had likely been hit and paralyzed by a vehicle. The older lady had been feeding “Lil Mama” for several years and was completely devastated. Unfortunately she disappeared before I could get there to help. Saturday morning I received another call informing she had returned so I raced up there to contain her. Sadly the damage to her hind end was definitely untreatable so I gave her an injection of sedative/pain relief and transported her to KCASE for euthanasia. 😞
🌈 💔 Rest easy Lil Mama, your life mattered.

Saturday morning we noticed that 2 of our injured adult racc**ns were acting very unusual.
🦝 Dune, who was finishing up recovering from a broken foot was very lethargic, refused to eat and seemed to be in pain. After consulting with our veterinarian we provided fluids, a steroid injection and an antibiotic injection since we weren’t positive what was going on. Sadly he passed away later that day in his favorite hammock. We are absolutely devastated! He was so close to a full recovery 😭
We still have no idea what happened but plan on getting him over to MSU for a necropsy ASAP.
🌈💔 We love you Dune, rest easy and run free.

🦝 Holmes, who we suspect was a previous pet, is staying with us while he works on losing weight and wilding up. Unfortunately he has some of the same symptoms Dune had, we are doing everything possible to save his life. I’m currently making the 2.5hr drive to who I consider the best racc**n vet in state.
We are praying she can help him and it’s not too late 🙏🏻💔😭

This has been a tough year for us in so many ways. 😞

At the vet with this adorable little dude who was picked up off the side of the road Tuesday night. I happened to see the post asking for help and picked him up yesterday afternoon.

Sadly he is still having seizures after we treated him for possible dehydration and low blood sugar so we are suspecting head trauma. We are starting both keppra and phenobarbital to hopefully stop additional seizure activity but other than that his brain just needs time to heal.

We are praying little Dorito makes a full recovery and can be adopted into a loving family. 🙏🏻

I want to give a HUGE shout out to all of our subpermittees, volunteers, transporters and everyone who has helped our rescue save so many Forgotten Souls 🖤🩶🤍
Super special thank you to our dedicated subpermittees who volunteer at the rescue on a regular basis! You guys are the one reason we are able to help so many animals. Your dedication and hard work are truly appreciated!

🩷Becky Berndt has volunteered with FSRR since early 2024. We have been through some crazy times together over the last couple years, lots of laughs and lots of tears. Having someone I know I can count on, who will show up 100% of the time is really a blessing! Our mutual hatred of most humans and love for racc**ns is definitely a bond. 😂 Becky volunteers at the rescue 4 times a week, religiously. Sometimes even more during baby season.
🐾 Adopted Charlie, a little terrier mixed
pup who was a stray then foster.

💛Courtney DuBay has been with us since June of 2025. Although she lives 50 minutes from the rescue she volunteers 3 times a week, every single week, even if I tell her not to risk the drive, lol. That’s dedication! Courtney is one of the kindest humans I have ever known. Her willingness to help and deep connection to all animals is truly inspiring. She is currently working on getting her full rehab license. 🥹
🐾 Adopted Apollo, the daddy Great Dane
we rescued. Also 2 tarantulas that came through FSRR.

💜Jessica Ailes started volunteering in Dec 2025. She has helped out at least once a week and drives all the way from Plainwell. Jessica absolutely loves the babies and works hard to keep everyone clean and happy.
🐾 Adopted Lucy, an all white bun that was dumped in White Pigeon.

🧡Amy Lewis honestly started volunteering the day I was born 😂 Being my big sister by 14 years made her more of a 2nd mom. Amy picked up SO many shifts over the course of this year’s baby season, just to help me out. If there’s one person, besides my amazing parents I can count on, it’s Amy. I am so blessed to have a family of such hard working people I can rely on.
🐾 Adopted Jonie, a 5 week old husky puppy who was dumped with her brother, who sadly died. Still don’t get the husky people…

💚Deb Wood (my mama) is the real hero, lol. Picking up, washing, drying, folding and dropping off all of the rescue laundry feels like a full time job during baby season! Thanks mom for always making sure our babies have fresh linens. Sorry about all the p**p 🫣

In addition to these amazing people we have:
Kristen Gentry, Michelle McCulloch, Stacey Mills and Noreen Heikes. Who help out at the rescue and do transport.

We also have a few bottle baby subpermittees: Devin Heitger (working on getting her license), Molly Knooihuisen (took the IWRC class last weekend), Jessyca Belen and Stephanie Nelson.

Oh, one more.
Congratulations to Renee Johnson who should be getting her full rehabilitation permit in the next couple weeks! We desperately need professional, capable, dedicated rehabbers and you are the perfect candidate!
Go give her new rescue page a follow!
🤍Johnson’s Wildlife Rescue and Rehab 🤍

We have such an awesome team of people, hopefully we can continue doing what we love, saving animals.

One more shoutout, Celine Saillant, who designed our saveforgottensouls site. Thanks for always being such a good friend and colleague. Your fierce passion for animal rights and welfare is appreciated by so many!

2 kittens adopted today and 1 new intake, the number is still decreasing right? 🫣🤷🏻‍♀️

Just returned from picking up this little nugget in Three Rivers. His mama and sibling were hit by a car, thank goodness someone heard his cries and picked him up. When I seen how new he was I knew he needed someone experienced. Good intentions end badly sometimes when people take in animals they are not trained to care for, so here we are..

It’s the milk stash for me though🥰

Ps. I’m considering having a bottle kitten training class. Would anyone be interested?
