Mark your calendar's for the September Gathering of EAA Chapter 99 on Sept 8th. Dr Raul Salazar will be presenting: "Mosaic LSA- ASTM Standards and Means of Compliance". These new regulations will usher in big changes to aircraft standards and who can fly them.

Burgers and Dogs on the grill at 6:15pm, presentation at 7:00 pm. Location is the chapter meeting room in the T hangars at Vero Beach Airport. 2801 Flight Safety Drive. See map below.

Open to all interested in aviation. Students welcome too!

Kaelyn Grall is the first Ray Scholarship recipient of Chapter 99 in Vero Beach, FL. She has been an active student member of the chapter. We are excited to be able to fuel the aviation enthusiasm that Kaelyn has as she begins her aviation journey. Kaelyn is on of only 200 recipients across the country.

The Ray Scholarship can be used to pay for primary flight training and is awarded yearly. The scholarship is available to students that have taken a Young Eagle Flight and are active in the chapter. It is awarded from the Ray Foundation, administered by the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association. Oshkosh, WI).

When flying in Florida, where might you cross the flight path of a glider?

The picture below shows the over 1000 flights that took off and landed at New Hibiscus Airpark (X52) in 2023.

The answer is anywhere in southern Florida!

Bob Youngblood gave a fantastic presentation to EAA Chapter 99 for their July meeting last night on Sharing the skies with gliders.

Bob has thousands of hours in powered planes, jets, and high performance gliders. He also has done over 8000 glider tows! He shared a few "close calls" with the heavy traffic in Vero Beach area.

A couple of safety requests- keep you eye out the windshield. Most gliders and towplanes do not have ADS-B, therefore will not show up on your fancy glass screen in your cockpit. 2. Do not use "the Outlet Mall" as a reporting point going into KVRB. (New Hibiscus and all the glider activity is 100 yards west of the mall.)

EAA 99 Monthly gathering will be Tues July 14th at the Meeting room at Vero Beach Airport. (see map below). Cookout at 6:15, presentation at 7 pm.

Bob Youngblood will be presenting: Sharing the skies safely- powered and non-powered flight.

Bob is a retired corporate pilot with 45 years of experience in flying high performance sailplanes. He has in excess of 3,000 hours of glider flight time and several thousand hours of powered flight with an impressive 6,000 glider tows.

The presentation is approved for FAA WINGS credit.

Congrats to Chapter 99 member Phil. A frequent Young Eagle volunteer as well our liaison to the FAA safety team and airport commission.

In the spirit of Safety Month, we’re spotlighting Phil Canal, a Lead Representative on the Treasure Coast FAA Safety Team, Vice Chairman of the Vero Beach Regional Airport Commission, and member of EAA Chapter 99. ✈️

Born into a Navy family, Phil grew up with a strong connection to service. His early interest in mechanics led him from working on cars to working at an FAA repair station/heliport supporting helicopter maintenance.

Phil later completed 32 years of service with the FAA, including senior management work in Washington, D.C., aviation safety leadership, aircraft certification support, planning, training, quality assurance, and coordinating the FAA’s response to 9/11 with the Department of Justice.

Thank you, Phil, for your continued contribution to aviation safety and the VRB community!
