Last Friday, Venice Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program students had the opportunity to learn more about important local government facilities. 👨‍⚖️

The cohort toured the Sarasota County Jail and got a behind-the-scenes view of the role guards play in inmate spaces. The group learned about the jail’s day-to-day operations, including inmate services and rehabilitation.

🐾Following the tour of the jail, the Leadership Program had the opportunity to interact with K-9 officers and observe how the K-9s are trained. The group gained a closer look at how the dogs respond to potentially dangerous situations and how their deployment can be the safest way to engage with suspects.

After learning more about law enforcement operations, the group attended presentations by Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller Karen Rushing, Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner, Sarasota County Tax Collector Mike Moran, and Brian Loughrey from the Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s Office. Each speaker provided an overview of their roles within Sarasota County, helping the group better understand how even the most overlooked daily services are carefully managed by county employees.

The group’s final stop was the Emergency Operations Center and 911 Call Center. During the tour, the cohort observed how operators handle emergencies and efficiently dispatch the appropriate departments to the scene.

🏛 Overall, the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program’s Government Day helped participants gain a deeper understanding of the wide range of services and work performed by Sarasota County.

Thank you to Grim Reaper Pest Solutions Llc for sponsoring the day! 👏

🎊We had a blast at the Giving Challenge Wrap Up Party!

It was amazing to meet the people behind all the brilliant non-profits in the area and to celebrate the prize winners! 👏

We are grateful to the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and the The Patterson Foundation for creating the opportunity for our organization and all the others to double the donations received, thus doubling the impact on the community!

We snagged a picture with Community Foundation President/CEO, Jessica Muroff, and Director of Community Impact, Michelle Croft - who is currently in our Leadership Venice class! Thank you ladies and your team for your hard work!

The money raised for our Foundation will be incredibly helpful for educating local high school students. 😁 The Teen Leadership Program gives them real life experiences to enhance their knowledge and develop leadership skills that will empower and motivate them to become involved and committed to their community.

📣Applications for the next school year are open! Learn more here: https://www.venicechamber.com/assets/pdf/Teen+Leadership+Application+-+Class+of+2027/

Our 2026 Leadership Venice Class took a journey through time during their History Day! 🕞😁

They started at Selby Gardens’s Historic Spanish Point, being shown the development of life on the bay from shell mounds to early settler structures.

Next, they went to the Venice Train Depot to hear from the Venice Area Historical Society about the different stages of Venice and the railroad's importance from the BLE, KMI, and the circus. 🚂

Lunch was had with Jeff Boone of The Boone Law Firm – our sponsor for the day! He talked with the class about growing up in Venice, tying in the history they had learned in the morning with lived experiences.

They also visited the Venice Museum and Venice, Florida Municipal Government Archives, and were taken around the area by Venice Florida Tours & Discover Sarasota Tours on a trolley tour to see historic houses and sites.

The Venice area is packed with wonderful history! Exploring the local history with our classes gives a shared understanding and appreciation of where we all call home, bringing us closer together. We're glad to have had good weather and a great Leadership day!

The VACC Board of Directors recently toured the Wellen Park High School campus as construction enters its final phase. 👩‍🏫🏫

The tour was hosted by VACC Board member John LaCivita, President & CEO of Willis Smith Construction, alongside Principal Mark Grossenbacher. It was clear the care and pride being poured into this project, and we congratulate everyone involved in bringing this new campus closer to completion. 👏

The Board is very grateful to Principal Grossenbacher for taking us through the campus and providing such an in-depth explanation on the project and success planning of this massive project.

The 2026 Leadership Venice class wrapped up an incredible Health & Human Services Day this past Friday! 🙌👩‍⚕️

We kicked things off with a (non-emergency!) visit to the new HCA Florida Doctors Hospital ER on the Venice Bypass, where we learned how stand-alone emergency rooms operate and serve the community.

From there, we headed to the always-popular Loveland Center, Inc. - and once again, they did not disappoint. Between the amazing staff, students, and residents, 18 new friendships were definitely made! 😁

Next stop was Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Venice, where we enjoyed lunch and experienced a presentation and demonstration that truly wowed the group.

We then made our way to PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Venice, our day sponsor. Located just south of the SMH campus on Curry Lane, PAM is an exceptional short-term rehab facility, and we’re grateful for their support. 🩹❤️

We wrapped up the afternoon back at the Chamber with informative and inspiring presentations from Family Promise, Agape Flights, Our Mother’s House, Venice Police Department Community Outreach, and the Laurel Civic Association.

A huge thank you to everyone who welcomed us and shared the incredible work they’re doing. What a fantastic day of learning, connection, and community impact! 🤩
