George & Linda Kirkish are the heart of Palouse Winery. After running an airline, a contracting business, raising four children, and living life to the fullest on Vashon Island, George & Linda took their drive for excellence and art in a new direction. In the fall of 2003, they set off into the wilds of the w**e industry by buying half a ton of Cabernet Franc grapes from Portteus Vineyard, located high on the hillside above Yakima Valley in Rattlesnake Hills. That first barrel ignited a drive and passion that has never faded. With expert guidance & regular classes at UC Davis’s oenology program, Palouse evolved further in its philosophy, along with its grape purchases. In early 2005 the w**ery expanded into the present day location on Vashon Island’s north end. Palouse produces 1,400 cases of hand crafted w**e a year, each vintage more stunning than the last. We extend our gratitude to George, Linda & Bernie for their Gold Level sponsorship of Vashon Events. Your support is immensely appreciated!

Vashon Art Bazaar
Blue Heron Education Center
Sat/Sun
October 17 & 18: 10am - 3pm

Great Art. Remarkable Prices. New Homes.
For two days, the Blue Heron will transform into the Vashon Art Bazaar — a lively, discovery-filled sale featuring original artwork from two special sources: artists opening their archives and collectors opening their private collections.

This is not a typical gallery exhibition. It is a chance to hunt, discover, collect, and take something wonderful home.

From Artists' Studios
Vashon artists will be bringing out older work, previous series, studies, small works, and other pieces from their studios and archives. Artists offering art at huge discounts (at least 40-50% off of their usual price, creating a rare opportunity for first-time art buyers and other collectors to add to their original art collections.
For artists, the Bazaar is an opportunity to put older work back into circulation while generating cash flow to support the creation of what comes next — new materials, new ideas, new experiments, and new bodies of work.

From Private Collections
The Bazaar will also feature artwork from private collections. Many longtime collectors have accumulated extraordinary art over the years and are now downsizing, moving to smaller homes, or simply ready to see treasured pieces begin a new chapter.
Rather than having wonderful art disappear into storage, these collectors are giving others the opportunity to discover and appreciate it.

And there is another important reason they are participating: their donated artwork becomes a direct contribution to essential fundraising for Vashon Center for the Arts. That means you may discover a work that has not been available on the market for years — while your purchase directly supports VCA.

Why Come?
==Buy original art at extraordinary prices.
If you have always wanted to begin collecting art — or add something unexpected to your collection — this is a perfect place to start.

==Discover artists you may not know yet.
The Bazaar brings many artists together under one roof. You may arrive looking for one thing and leave having discovered an entirely new artist.

==Explore art from private collections.
Discover pieces that have been loved and lived with for years and are now ready for new walls, new homes, and new art lovers.

==Support working artists.
Purchasing participating artists' work helps turn existing inventory into resources artists can use to continue creating.

==Support Vashon Center for the Arts.
The Art Bazaar is an important fundraising event for VCA. Proceeds help sustain the exhibitions, performances, arts education, and community events. As such, all purchases are sales tax free.

On Vashon Island, First Fridays are when the artists, galleries, and local merchants put up new art installations and window displays to celebrate the month. Crowds gather to view the art, listen to music and visit with friends. The town is alive!

Vashon Events is proud to promote this monthly community-building event by gathering information from galleries, artists, and merchants about their First Friday plans. We send out a monthly newsletter to let community members know just what is happening.

Kiliii Yüyan: Indigenous Wisdom for a Thriving Planet
Vashon Center for the Arts
Thursday, Oct 29 | 7:30pm

$38 General | $36 Senior | Youth Free *ticket reservation required

Photographer and National Geographic Explorer Kiliii Yüyan asks a vital question: what keeps the planet’s most extraordinary ecosystems thriving? From coral reefs and rainforests to the Arctic tundra, he shows how Indigenous stewardship has sustained these environments for generations.

Through encounters with polar bears alongside Iñupiat hunters, dives into mangrove shark nurseries, and time spent with elders whose knowledge spans centuries, Kiliii reveals a powerful truth: this wisdom is not a relic of the past. Drawing from Guardians of Life, he makes the case that Indigenous ecological knowledge is a living, evolving guide—offering practical solutions and a blueprint for protecting the planet’s future.

Robbie Fulks
Vashon Center for the Arts
Saturday, November 21 | 7:30pm

$45 Premium | $40 General | Youth Free *ticket reservation required

Join us for an evening with Robbie Fulks, the critically acclaimed, GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter whose sharp wit, masterful storytelling, and genre-bending musicianship have made him one of Americana’s most distinctive voices.

Since emerging in the 1990s as a pioneer of today’s Americana movement, Fulks has built a career defined by restless creativity—moving easily between country, folk, bluegrass, power pop, jazz, and old-time traditions. Across 16 albums, he has earned praise for songs that are as funny as they are poignant, filled with vivid characters, unexpected turns, and a novelist’s eye for detail.

Fulks’ latest work, Now Then, reflects the full range of his artistry: richly textured, musically adventurous, and threaded with humor, reflection, and hard-won wisdom. Whether singing about love, aging, family secrets, or the strange beauty of everyday life, Fulks brings audiences into songs that feel deeply human and unmistakably alive.

Don’t miss this intimate performance at VCA on Saturday, November 21 with one of Americana’s most inventive and engaging songwriters.

Brooke Gassiot: Tidal Bodies
Vashon Center for the Arts
October 2 - November 1
First Friday Reception: October 2, 5-8pm

"Tidal Bodies" explores the ways time, memory, and transformation move through the body. Through painting and cyanotype, Brooke Gassiot traces the shifting stages of a woman's life—from puberty, pregnancy, and birth to menopause, breast cancer, aging, and healing. The body becomes both archive and landscape, holding the visible and invisible marks of change, resilience, and lived experience.

Brooke combines cyanotype exposures made from hand-cut figurative forms with acrylic and oil painting. Deep Prussian blue evokes water, emotion, and the unseen currents connecting our inner and outer worlds, while layers of flesh tones and gestural brushwork move between representation and abstraction.

Developed over two years with support from a 4Culture materials grant, "Tidal Bodies" brings together large-scale paintings and cyanotypes. Though rooted in Gassiot's own experience, the work invites viewers to recognize their own stories of transformation, creating space for reflection, empathy, and connection.
