The next caning class at Hart Square will feature footstools. Caning was an essential skill in Appalachia. This craft would be passed down within families, making chairs and stools last for generations instead of throwing broken furniture away and replacing it. Join us to learn to replace the woven bottom of a stool in a herringbone pattern, and then enjoy your new Carolina Mountain Footstool at home!

Now that school is back in session, are you looking for an enriching afterschool experience for your child? Registration is open for the Catawba Junior Appalachian Musicians, which meets at Hart Square weekly on Tuesday afternoons. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn to play guitar or banjo in the traditional Appalachian custom. We understand that having access to an instrument is often a barrier to music education, so we are excited to be able to offer an instrument loan program! Added bonus, we are a bus stop for Banoak Elementary School and Jacobs Fork Middle School!

The first session is September 15th, so secure your child’s space today.

Executive Director, Rebecca Hart and Development Director, Lorissa Vines were honored to represent Hart Square Foundation at Corning’s 175th Anniversary Celebration where the organization recognized their nonprofit community partners. It was such a privilege to celebrate Corning’s legacy and community impact as we learned more about the missions of the nonprofit organizations they support.

We are extremely grateful to Corning for their partnership in making it possible to expand access to cultural heritage education for youth in our community. With field trip season upon us, we recognize that we could not offer this experience without the generosity of our supporters.

Thank you, Corning. You’re leaving an amazing mark on our community!

It’s incredibly important to pass on historic restoration and preservation skills to the next generation of preservationists. It’s been such an honor to work alongside Intern, Camren Champion, this summer. Camren has assisted with roof patching, structure stabilization, traditional daubing and chinking, and much more.

Thank you again to the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association for making this preservation focused internship possible.
