Calling PAST Washington Town and Country Fair Exhibitors who showcased livestock, home economics, or agriculture products at the fair over the past 100 years! University of Missouri is collecting stories from past exhibitors to research how fairs impact community. We’re kicking off the project with an Exhibitor Reunion on August 5th from 3-5 p.m. The event will be hosted at First Baptist Church of Washington at 111 E. 14th Street, Washington, MO 63090. Calling all Franklin County 4-H members, Clover Kids, and Volunteers! Join us on Sunday, August 2nd at 4:00 p.m. for the Washington Town & Country Fair Parade! We will be staged on 2nd Street, (Zone 2) north of St. Francis Borgia Grade School starting at 3:15 p.m. If you want to help decorate the parade float, meet at 1402 N. Park Drive, Washington at 2 p.m. We hope to see you there to kick off another great fair!

Next up, we have Emma from the Jeffriesburg 4-H Club. She is a long-time 4-H member who has participated in several different projects over the years including swine.

"This year was special because it was my last year in 4-H and I focused on showing my hog, Fiona. She was a big part of my time in 4-H, and I learned a lot about responsibility and dedication by caring for her every day. From feeding and cleaning to preparing her for the show, it took a lot of hard work, but it was rewarding to see the effort pay off in the ring. Fiona taught me patience and the importance of sticking with a commitment even when it gets tough. Looking back, I’m grateful for everything 4-H has given me over the years. Showing Fiona this year was a reminder of how much I’ve grown through this program, not just in my project skills, but also in confidence and responsibility. Even though this was my last year, I’ll always carry the lessons and memories from 4-H with me."

It's just amazing to see the growth of our 4-H kids from their first year to their last! Thank you for sharing your 4-H story, Emma! Was it hard work? Say "hello" to James! James is a 5th year member of the Go Hog Wild 4-H Club. He participates in the swine project as well as country cured bacon. He's our next My Story Monday!

"My name is James and I am a member of Go Hog Wild 4-H. I raised and showed my hog, Bob, in the Washington Town & Country Fair and participated in the bacon project. We weighed throughout the summer, but was 281 pounds during weigh in. I got 4th place during the hog show this year and made me feel really good. My other hog got sick this year but thank goodness it was not Bob! I learned when things get hard you shouldn’t give up. I am looking forward to many more years in 4-H."

"My name is Josie and I am nine years old. This was my first year showing a market steer and I loved it! My dad and I picked out my steer and I named him Marshmallow. My dad moved my steer to our farm and I began feeding and watering my steer every morning and evening when I came home from school. My steer was scared of me at first but then he slowly started getting comfortable with me. I was so excited when I was able to pet his head. When it got closer to the fair, my dad helped me learn how to walk him. I really liked walking him because he walked right beside me and would always stand very pretty. The good thing about Marshmallow is that he wouldn’t nudge me in a hard way, he just wanted me to pet him all the time and give him treats. I became very close to him while walking him. Walking my steer was my favorite experience of raising and caring for him. I was very excited when the fair started. I loved hanging out with my friends in the steer barn and being close to Marshmallow so I could make sure he always had plenty of food and water. I was nervous for the show but Marshmallow and I did great! I was very sad to say goodbye to Marshmallow, but I can’t wait to start another 4-H journey with a new animal next year. My favorite person to be with me during this journey was my dad. My dad grew up showing market steers in his 4-H club. My dad taught me how to feel comfortable with my steer and I really enjoyed spending time with him. I look forward to showing my market steer next year and I am thankful for this experience."

Calling all Franklin County 4-H Members! Don't forget to sign up for Achievement Day by July 13th! Achievement Day is an opportunity for members to show what they've learned & accomplished this year through their projects. This is also a chance to develop public speaking skills in a safe space with caring, encouraging adults. Youth can do demonstrations, team demonstrations, prepared and extemporaneous speeches, and even show and tell for our youngest members. This is a small step to help youth build their speaking skills and develop confidence in themselves. Those who participate and receive a blue ribbon will be eligible to attend Ed Tour on August 11th. Youth will visit Missouri S & T in Rolla, MO and spend the morning in the creation lab making their own STEM projects and then enjoy some lunch out! We hope you can join us!
