Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced 138 grants totaling more than $144 million through the Alabama Rural Health Transformation Program, with projects reaching rural communities across all 67 counties. 🌾

The funding will support workforce development, mental health services, electronic health records, technology, cybersecurity and other efforts designed to strengthen rural healthcare. This represents the first distribution from the approximately $203.4 million Alabama received for 2026 through the federal Rural Health Transformation Program, part of a five-year, $50 billion national initiative. The grants fund five of Alabama’s 11 planned initiatives: Rural Health, Rural Workforce, Mental Health, Rural Health Practice, and Collaborative Electronic Health Record and IT and Cybersecurity. State officials said additional grants are still being processed and are expected to be announced later this year. 💸

The Alabama Rural Health Association joins the rural health community in mourning the passing of Dr. John Earl Brandon, a longtime family physician in Gordo and a dedicated champion for rural healthcare across Alabama. For more than 40 years, Dr. Brandon served patients in rural Pickens County while also shaping the next generation of rural physicians through his leadership as medical director of the University of Alabama’s Rural Medical Scholars Program. His extraordinary commitment to rural medicine was recognized in 2026 when the program’s Sage Award, honoring significant contributions to rural health, was renamed the Dr. John Brandon Award. Dr. Brandon leaves a remarkable legacy of service, mentorship, and advocacy, and his impact will continue to be felt in rural communities throughout Alabama for generations to come. 🕊️
