Conversation Club among Donetsk region and American teenagers.

After several months of preparations, our meetings with the Bylbasivka Hub School officially kicked off on Wednesday, June 17, and are now past week 8.

The first meeting of Conversation Club, opened with welcome remarks by the School Director, Lilia MELESHKO. The Ukrainian students presented their school, as well as their various interests, Ukrainian people, culture and traditions. The US participants also introduced themselves and talked about their interests and where they live.

The Ukrainian side is represented by three English Language Instructors and 12 students, ages 13 to 17. On the U.S. side, we have two UCARE representatives (Vera and Lana) and four dedicated young participants: Viyka (VA), Joseph, Ethan, and Robert (MI).
Every week, we connect on Wednesdays for 1-1.5 hours to discuss topics of interest, to include (so far) Favorite Holidays, Food, Family Traditions, Cultural Stereotypes, Historic Events and Figures, Movies and Actors, Music, Favorite Songs and Singers.

Here is how some of the participants reflect on their experience:
Ethan shared, “I thought it was cool how many similarities we have in our culture with the way we describe historical figures that were important to our country or just how we liked similar bands or hobbies.”

Viyka, whose HS classes already resumed, wrote in a text, “ I hope everyone knows how grateful I am to have been a part of the initiative and how their kindness and understanding was appreciated. I hope everyone is safe as well. I hope it [the initiative] continues to thrive…”
The Students and Instructors in Ukraine are very much interested in continuing the meetings, either as an extracurricular activity, or, even, as part of the classroom activities. Their schooling is still on-line (due to the proximity of the front line), which allows for a lot of flexibility.

We are looking for classrooms / clubs / student and youth groups willing and able to continue meeting with the Bilbasivka Hub School Students and Instructors during school year to help them work on their English Language skills, as well as help them feel connected to the world.
