Sometimes, the suffering an animal endures will stay with you forever, even though you will never get to know them.

It's taken me some time to post about this poor girl. From the moment we saw her while doing outreach in Pontiac, we knew her suffering was immense. We quickly developed a plan to catch her and, thankfully, were successful.

I had to make a few decisions that I really did not want to make, as we were not able to find shelter assistance, even to end her suffering. I suspect she had rodenticide poisoning from ingesting another animal that had been poisoned.

We had so many animals on our list needing assistance. Do we wait in an emergency clinic's lobby for possibly hours, even though I know she was too far gone, or continue to assist the animals on our list?

She spent the rest of the day with our team and people who actually cared about her welfare. I took her home knowing her most likely outcome. We set her up at my home, giving her time to rest, instead of struggling on the streets. That night, we had a severe storm, where she most likely would have died on her own or drowned. I could not bear that scenario.

I must have checked on her 100 times that night. Each time watching her decline, praying that one time I would check and she would be showing signs of progress. The pose of her head tucked under is never good.

Sadly, when I checked on her early Monday morning, she had passed. For me, it was important to have her cremated and have her paw print. I will keep it with me forever as a representation for those who have no one to care for them, no name, no chance...

Little girl, we truly cared.

🚨🐾 Leaving Dogs in Dangerous Heat Will Not Be Tolerated 🐾🚨

As temperatures begin to rise across Macomb County, Macomb County Animal Control would like to remind pet owners that dogs depend on us to provide safe and humane care.

Leaving a dog unattended in a parked vehicle can quickly become life-threatening. Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can soar within minutes, leading to heat stroke, organ failure, and death.

It is equally important to remember that it is not acceptable to leave dogs outdoors all day during extreme weather conditions.

It is unlawful to leave a dog outside and unattended for an unreasonable amount of time during periods of extreme weather when temperatures remain above 90°F. This applies to dogs in fenced yards, on tie-outs, in carriers, or otherwise exposed to the elements. Access to a doghouse alone does not satisfy the ordinance unless the structure is properly climate-controlled and weather-resistant.

Dogs left outdoors in extreme temperatures are at risk for:
• Heat stroke
• Dehydration
• Burned paw pads
• Physical distress and suffering
• Serious injury or death

Pet owners are responsible for ensuring their animals have appropriate shelter, protection from the elements, and are not left in conditions that could reasonably be expected to be injurious to their health or welfare.

⚠️ If you see a dog in distress inside a vehicle or left outdoors in dangerous weather conditions, please contact your local law enforcement agency or Animal Control immediately.

Our message is simple: If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for them.

Macomb County Animal Control is committed to protecting the animals in our community and will continue to educate, advocate, and enforce animal welfare laws when necessary.

It is going to be hot today, do NOT leave your animals outside for long periods of time. If they must be outside, make sure they are in a shady area and have plenty of COLD and CLEAN water. Do NOT keep them on a short chain.

♥️🤍💙 Memorial Day 2026 ♥️🤍💙

On March 13, 1942, the United States Army officially launched its War Dog Program during World War II with the creation of the Army K-9 Corps. Since then, Military Working Dogs have deployed to every major battlefield and continue to serve as integral members of our operations on land, at sea, and in the air.

Today, approximately 1,600 working dogs deploy alongside their human partners in combat zones with our most prestigious military units, along our borders, and throughout the entire world.

For Memorial Day, we celebrate these dogs like EErek.

This May 2026, the U.S. Army honored MWD EErek for his exemplary service, explosive/narcotics detection, and ongoing patrols, celebrating the unbreakable bond between soldiers and their dogs.

It's not uncommon for family members to move their dogs to a grandparent's home when their living situation changes.

This poor dog only had a "lean-to" for shelter. The grandmother did not have the financial means to provide proper housing.

The Animal Care Network stepped in to provide proper shelter, straw, bowls and a tie out for him. We absolutely prefer that dogs live indoors. He is a very energetic puppy that she cannot handle on her own. Hopefully, the actual owner steps up soon. We will continue to monitor the situation. Good job team on making his living conditions a little better.

🎆 2026 Fireworks Safety 🎇

America is turning 250 this year. Fireworks may be even more prevalent this summer...maybe even this holiday weekend. This may be hard for many pets.

To keep pets safe during fireworks, secure them indoors in a quiet, comfortable room with familiar items and white noise to mask sounds. Secure your fence gate.

Keep pets on a leash during walks, ensure they have up-to-date ID tags/microchips, and store fireworks/debris away from them to prevent toxic ingestion.

Essential Safety Measures

⭐️Create a Safe Haven: Choose an interior room with no windows or a secured crate with blankets, toys, and soft music or a TV to drown out noise.

⭐️Keep Indoors: Bring pets inside well before dark to avoid panic-induced escapes.

⭐️Secure the Perimeter: Check fences and close curtains or blinds to hide bright flashes.

⭐️Walk Early: Exercise your pets earlier in the day to avoid the start of festivities.

⭐️Do Not Take Pets to Displays: Leave pets at home rather than bringing them to crowded, loud events.

⭐️Update Identification: Ensure collars have current contact info and that microchips are registered.

Handling Fear and Panic

⭐️Stay Calm: Your behavior influences your pet; act normally to show them there is no danger.

⭐️Distraction: Use treat-filled toys to keep them busy and calm.

⭐️Anxiety Aids: Consider using anxiety vests/shirts or consult a veterinarian for calming aids, such as pheromone diffusers or medications.

⭐️Practice Desensitization: Use recordings of fireworks to desensitize pets to the sound well in advance.
