One of the things we’ve always had to consider when doing the Torrington Strawberry Festival, is that we can’t run out of shortcake… so we’re inevitably going to end the day with product.

We have always turned this surplus (loss) into into a gain by helping the needy.

This year we were ecstatic to donate almost 100 portions of strawberry shortcake to the FISH / Friends in Service to Humanity of Northwestern Connecticut, Inc.

Immediately following the festival, right from our refrigerator truck to the shelter, we delivered 40 lbs of strawberries, 96 biscuits and a case of whipped cream for the residents to enjoy and share in the fun!

A huge thank you to Deirdre Houlihan DiCara and her entire staff for the wonderful work they do.

Little ReyAnne woke up this morning, dressed herself and was ready to go meet Strawberry Shortcake, but confusion over rain dates caused her to miss the festival… So Strawberry Shortcake came to meet her with a cool strawberry bag filled with the ingredients to make her own strawberry shortcake!

Erin needs your help…
I share this post because we have hosted and facilitated the Big Idaho Potato Truck’s appearances in Torrington for the past 10 years, with this coming July 16th’s visit the 5th time that Erin would have arrived with it…

She had been diagnosed with lymphoma, and needs help hitting her $15,000 gofundme goal, and she’s very close!

To know Erin is to love her, absolutely the sweetest and loveliest person you could ever meet, and we have been blessed to have her here with the truck.

Links to donate are in the attached post… thank you!

If you were around in 1906, you would’ve had the opportunity to see Julius Marx (aka Groucho) performing in his first tour of the melodramatic play "The Man of her Choice” when it arrived here in Torrington at the Opera House on October 3rd.

Born October 2, 1890, Groucho most likely spent is 16th birthday at the Conley Inn (Yankee Pedlar).

Groucho was in the cast of this regular play, embarking on a long tour. It ran through the winter of 1906-7, travelling from New Jersey up New England to Canada. Groucho appeared in a "kid" part as office boy Jimmy Armstrong, singing the hit song “Mary Moore” to rave reviews!

The touring troop returned for a repeat performance on December 28th, at the same location.

The Torrington Opera House opened August 17, 1899 as Union or Germania Hall. Built by the German society here in town, became an Opera House in 1900 after Torrington‘s first Opera House was leveled by fire.

More on the early theaters of Torrington to follow soon!
