🌳 Thank you to our volunteer, Ben, for sharing your knowledge on willow with us! And thank you to those who stopped by to learn and helped trim the willow fence around the raised beds. We also had some other volunteers moving mulch in the food forest. It was a nice informational and productive morning!

Spring is emerging here at the garden and with it flowers, community and a promise of spring!
🌳 The Living Willow fence is filling in with vibrant yellows and reds, all trimmed up and ready for our guest speaker to teach us how to build with live trees!
(Don't worry, we saved some willow for weaving together later in the season. 🧺)
🪏 We've met more wonderful volunteers, excited to learn permaculture skills, and build a beautiful community food forest.
🍇 The plants are emerging from dormancy beautifully, with strong growth and lovely buds, awaiting warmer temperatures to leaf out and harness the power of the sun!

Meet us at the garden on April 12th @ 10:00 am for Living Willow - Crafting Practical Art with Trees to learn the ins and outs of weaving living willow into one of a kind creations.

Among the delicious food at today's potluck, our speaker for next week's seminar brought Chinese Chestnuts, scored and roasted to perfection. 🤤

Let us tell you that they were SO DELICIOUS!

Chinese Chestnuts are adapted to grow here in NY, but take a while to produce.

So, what's an anxious gardener to do?

Ben, who will be teaching Succession Planting next Sunday at 10:00 am, told us that it's best to grow Chestnuts surrounded by other productive plants. While the Chestnut tree grows, the others (think raspberries, currants, cherry trees, or even tomatoes) grow, produce and thrive all while the Chestnut is getting started. That way, you've made the most of your space while that polky canopy tree grows to size and maturity.

If you'd like to learn more about succession planting, join Ben at the DeeplyRooted Community Garden this Sunday at 10:00 am.

See you there!
