JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger's statement on the heinous attack on Central Synagogue worshippers:

What happened at Central Synagogue is an assault on the fundamental right of every New Yorker to worship in peace and without fear. JCRC-NY stands firmly behind Rabbi Angela Buchdahl and the entire Central Synagogue community.

Words of support from political leaders matter, but we need to move beyond the familiar cycle of condemnation followed by pledges to devote additional security and more dollars to the problem. We need greater accountability to cure a climate increasingly poisoned by inflammatory rhetoric that gives permission to target and exclude Jews.

This is not normal.

There is something fundamentally wrong with a society in which people need to pass heavily armed security simply to enter a synagogue and pray. Jewish institutions already devote extraordinary resources to security, and New York remains a major recipient of federal nonprofit security funding precisely because the threat is so serious. However, the measure of our success cannot be how many guards we can place outside a house of worship. It must be whether people can enter one without fear.

I am deeply grateful to Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the NYPD, and law enforcement. Security is necessary, particularly with the High Holidays and UN General Assembly approaching. That said, security can only protect a door: leadership must address why that door needs so much protection in the first place.

This past weekend, anti-Muslim graffiti was found on a sign at the construction site of the Islamic Center of Mastic-Shirley.

It is time to stop the hate.

As Jews, we know all too well what it feels like to have our identity, our faith, and our community targeted. We also know that hatred toward one group can never be justified by anger or abuse.

We may not always agree. We may have deep differences about religion, politics, Israel, or any number of issues. But disagreement can never be an excuse for hate speech, intimidation, or violence.

We are better than this. We must be better than this.

We must stand against antisemitism, Islamophobia, and hatred in all its forms—not because we agree with everyone, but because every person deserves to live in peace, dignity, and safety.

There is room for disagreement. There must never be room for hate.

We unequivocally condemn Thursday’s violent attacks in New York City, one of which appears to be antisemitic in nature, and pray for the full recovery of the two men who were injured – one visibly Jewish and one Asian.

We’re horrified — but not surprised — by today’s brutal attacks on the Upper West Side, when a man shouting “Allahu Akbar” stabbed two New Yorkers, one Asian and one visibly Jewish. We’re grateful to the NYPD for its swift response in apprehending the suspect and pray for the victims’ full recovery.

Tonight, we begin observing Tisha B’Av, the solemn day on which we mourn the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and the exile of the Jewish people from our ancestral homeland.

For thousands of years, Jerusalem has remained at the heart of Jewish prayer, hope, and identity—a testament to our enduring and unbreakable connection to the Land of Israel.

As we reflect on our history and the resilience of the Jewish people, may this day inspire remembrance, unity, and hope for a future of peace.
