It was butterfly release day during Tuesday's joint science class between rooms 114 and 115! A bittersweet day, as students watched these amazing creatures start as caterpillars, cocoon themselves, and then emerge as beautiful butterflies! To combat any sadness watching their new friends fly away, our George Crothers Memorial Day staff were prepared, coming up with a bunch of fun activities like butterfly tic-tac-toe and shape counting; even creating butterfly release certificates!

The other wonderful thing about our First Author Celebration last week was the encouragement, questions, thoughts, and constructive criticism of our audience members! And in typical therapy-partnership fashion, students had a wide range of possible ways that they could do just that- through gesturing, high-mid-low-tech devices, switch use, communication boards, facial expressions, manual signs, and more! It made the event so interactive and will lead to even more and more writing next year!

Our George Crothers Memorial School high school students got in on the action during their First Author presentations last week, with stories about favorite moments (like skating with the Little Flyers), favorite sports, favorite parts of the day, favorite music, and more! Congratulations to all of our student authors on their presentations and for building a portfolio full of fantastic writing!

An entire year of brainstorming topics, writing stories, reviewing favorite shows and books, examining favorite memories, anecdotes, and celebrations, and revising, editing, and presenting culminated in this year's First Author Writing Celebration last week!

Students from all age groups (elementary and middle school featured here! Our high school students still to come!) took the plunge, moving to the Author's Chair to present one of their favorite pieces of writing to their classmates, staff members, and families. After presenting, authors would listen to a round of feedback before giving way to the next author's presentation. It was a wonderful couple of days celebrating these fabulous student authors! Shout out to Speech Language Pathologist Alicia Tomkowich and Assistive Technology Specialist / SLP Rhiannon Smith for all of their hard work in planning this wonderful celebration and for working closely with staff and students on something that they will always be proud of!

Room 117 took a trip to Sensory FIT and had a blast climbing, bouncing, jumping, stretching, playing and zoning out in front of those cool bubble displays! It is absolutely the inclusive space for all abilities!

Room 13 took a ride to The Barn at Spring Brook Farm where they got to meet some adorable animals, walk a horse, and enjoy a hayride! We truly appreciate The Barn's mission and what they stand for, bringing animal-assisted and nature-based experiences to children living with disabilities. We hope this is the first of many visits!

Some highlights from this outstanding performance by the Philadelphia Postal Employees Choir, this incredible group of performers and US Postal Service employees! Our students and staff rocked, swayed, moved, and grooved to their wonderful performance. They definitely delivered for us!

Room 117 wrapped up their unit on money by making a shopping list and heading over to the local Dollar Tree store! Looks like there are definitely some unique ways of considering what to buy, like Joy determining if the frozen section is properly refrigerated!

From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank Jacqui Cahill, one of our outstanding nurses here at George Crothers Memorial School at CADES, and her family for once again sharing in the memory of her late husband Mike with ice cream for our students and staff. Mike loved the sound of the ice cream truck and was a dedicated Flyers fan, so this year (the 4th time the Cahill family has made this possible for us) everyone came out decked in their Flyers best (or closest thing!) and enjoyed some ice cream in honor of Mike, Jacqui, and their family. Jacqui, like her whole team, has been there for our staff and students in the happiest and most difficult of times, and like the sign says above the Mister Softee Ice Cream Truck, they are "the very best." Sharing a deeply personal moment like this with our community is an incredible gesture. Thank you Jacqui and thank you to her whole family for their generosity in what may always be a day of sadness mixed with memories of joy in who Mike was and how much he meant to his family.
