“....we realized somehow that we weren’t going to college just for ourselves, but for all the girls who would follow after us…”
Our founder, Bettie Locke Hamilton, penned these words over 80 years ago, and today we could not be more grateful for her work and for the work of all of the women that have come before us. We are particularly grateful that our founding members created a space for us on campus in 2013, and we aim to uphold the ideals set out for us by our international sisterhood. As an organization, we strive for the highest levels of social, intellectual, and perhaps most importantly, moral growth. This is no easy task, but it is one that we ask our members to take on everyday. That being said, the views and opinions of individual members do not always embody the values of Theta, and sometimes they stand in stark opposition to them. Let us be clear: any suggestion that an individual should pay homage to their wealthy classmates for their education represents not only a misunderstanding of Swarthmore’s admission and financial aid processes, but is also incongruent with our chapter’s values.
We thank you for your continued support of one of the largest and most diverse women’s groups on campus. As Swat Thetas, we’re committed to being financially, intellectually, and emotionally accessible to all of our members and potential new members. As a campus organization, we’re here to support an environment that fosters respect, understanding, and empathy. This is the legacy we hope to preserve for the college women who will follow after us. Please reach out if you have any questions.
Loyally,
The Executive Board of the Alpha Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta
