📬 Almost 200 postcards written for a full-service Swannanoa Post Office!
Thank you to everyone who joined last night’s Swannanoa Grassroots Alliance postcard-writing event to advocate for restoring full postal services to our community.
Hurricane Helene destroyed Swannanoa’s post office, and more than two years later, residents with post office boxes still travel 13 miles to Merrimon Avenue in Asheville to pick up packages.
A new post office is expected in early 2027 and will bring PO boxes back to Swannanoa. However, it won’t include the full retail services available before Helene. Most transactions will use self-service kiosks, with limited in-person assistance. That means no postal money orders, no international shipping, and limited cash transactions.
This matters because not everyone has reliable transportation, a credit or debit card, or the ability to use digital services. Even trips to the closer post offices in Oteen or Black Mountain can take more than an hour round trip by public transportation, including walking and waiting. For older adults, people with disabilities or mobility challenges, and residents without reliable transportation, that’s a significant burden.
Modernization should expand access, not create new barriers. We’re not asking for something new. We’re asking for the full postal services Swannanoa had before Hurricane Helene.
