Happy National Compost Day! We’re lucky to have multiple ways to compost right here in Summit! Why compost?

Food loss and waste are responsible for an estimated 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions—more than the entire aviation industry. When food ends up in landfills, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that traps far more heat than carbon dioxide.

In Summit, you can:

♻️ Bring food scraps to the Summit Transfer Station

🚚 Sign up for curbside pickup through services such as Java’s Compost or Neighborhood Compost

🌿 Start a backyard compost

By composting, we can reduce waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and create nutrient-rich compost for gardens and landscapes.

Which composting option works best for your household? Let us know below! 💚

May is National Bike Month 🚲

Encourage your kids to bike to school, ride together as a family, or swap a few car trips for two wheels. It’s a simple way to get outside, build healthy habits, reduce pollution - and even save a little 💰 on gas. ⛑️ 🪖 🚲

Excited to see this new artwork at City Hall and learn about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle in Summit! This Wed, April 29, at 3:30.

To wrap up Earth Month and celebrate the creative ways we can reduce waste in our community, please join us at a brief ceremony on Wednesday, April 29, at 3:30PM at City Hall.

Representatives from Summit Public Art will introduce the newly installed art piece at City Hall, created by Nigerian artist Eugene Ebipade Kenboye from discarded flip-flops and Crocs. Summit Mayor Elizabeth Fagan MD will share remarks on the collective impact of volunteerism and how you can get involved in Summit to help protect and preserve our natural resources, and members of our Summit Recycling Advisory Committee, Summit NJ Environmental Commission, and The Summit Free Market Steering Committee will also be in attendance to share information on:

-Summit Free Market donation guidelines and how to get involved
-Summit's recycling guidelines and how to use the Recycle Coach app to properly dispose of hundreds of items
-Summit's own Tiny Forest, located behind the Community Center
..and more!

We encourage residents of all ages to stop by and check out the new art installation, learn some new "green" tips, and pick up your copy of our Planet Protectors Challenge, perfect for our young residents and environmental stewards-in-training! On it you'll find a scavenger hunt of environmentally friendly things you can do around town to help reduce waste in Summit and protect our planet. Grab a friend and check off as much as you can this spring and summer and declare yourself a Planet Protector!

Today, Friday April 24th, parent volunteers will lead Earth in the Classroom lessons in our Summit elementary schools! (Jefferson had this last Friday!) See below 👇 for topics by grade level.

These age-appropriate lessons were developed by Summit Green Schools + Summit school district to empower and educate children and families. Ask your child what they learned! This can be a great time for family discussions about small changes we can all make to take good care of our Earth! 🌎 ❤️

Many of the schools also celebrated Earth Day with additional activities and assemblies this week!

Grade 1: The Superpowers of Plants 🌱
Grade 2: Reduce Reuse Recycle ♻️
