Substance Use Increases with Age ↗️

📊 The transition into high school is a critical time for prevention.
Among Nicholas County students surveyed, past-year alcohol use increased from 3.9% of seventh graders to 18.5% of eleventh graders. The use of any illicit drug also increased from 3.9% in seventh grade to 12.4% in eleventh grade.

These numbers remind us that prevention cannot be a one-time conversation. Young people need continued education, encouragement, healthy relationships, and trusted adults throughout every stage of adolescence.

Starting early matters—but continuing the conversation matters just as much. 💬

💜 September is Recovery Month! 💜

This Recovery Month, we are proud to showcase some of the incredible Peer Recovery Support Specialists in our community who are doing the work every single day.

We have partnered with the City of Summersville, WV and SCTV - Summersville Community Television to give our local peers an opportunity to share their stories—their journeys, their experiences, and the powerful work they are doing to bring hope and recovery to others.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing their stories with you because recovery is real, recovery is possible, and the people walking alongside others on this journey deserve to be celebrated.

Today, we gathered to remember the lives lost to overdose, to support the families and friends who carry their memory, and to remind our community that hope is still alive. 💜

International Overdose Awareness Day is about more than statistics. It is about real people—sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, siblings, friends, and neighbors whose lives mattered. Every name written on our remembrance board represents a story, a family, and a life that will never be forgotten.

We shared stories, offered resources, provided naloxone, stood together in prayer, and created space for both grief and hope. We also reminded our community that overdose is preventable and recovery is possible. No one should ever feel ashamed to ask for help, carry Naloxone, or learn how to save a life.

To everyone who came, shared, remembered, prayed, or stood beside someone who is hurting—thank you. And to every person still fighting for recovery: your life matters, your story is not over, and there is hope.

Tonight, we remember those we have lost.
We honor those who survived.
We support the families who continue to grieve.
And we keep fighting for those who are still here. 💜

Stress Is Affecting Nicholas County Students 📚
Schoolwork was the most commonly reported source of stress among surveyed students.

50.5% of 7th graders
60.9% of 9th graders
65.7% of 11th graders

Across all surveyed grades, 58.7% identified schoolwork as a source of stress. Students also reported stress connected to family (27.3%), friends (25.3%), sports or athletics (23.4%), health concerns (14.5%), and finances (11%).

At the same time, 29.2% said believing they could handle emotional struggles alone might keep them from seeking help. Another 18% worried about what others would think, and 10.3% said they would not know where to go.

Awareness is not enough—we must create environments where students feel safe speaking up before stress becomes a crisis or leads to unhealthy coping. 🤝
