A headline is a signal, not a verdict on veterans or their value in the workforce.

MYTH: When the job market softens, veterans just need to submit more applications.

FACT: A tougher market calls for a sharper strategy. BLS September figures put unemployment among post-9/11 veterans at 4.1%, up from 3.5%, as overall job growth stalled. That’s worth paying attention to, but it doesn’t define the talent, experience, or potential of those who served.

Make your next move intentional: translate your military experience into the language employers use, focus on roles that match your strengths, build targeted professional connections, and pursue certifications valued in your field. More applications aren’t always the answer. Better positioning can help your experience stand out.

Military experience isn’t a fallback plan. It’s a foundation for building America’s infrastructure.

REBOOT (National Veterans Transition Services) received more than $980,000 from BlackRock Future Builders to launch Operation Future Builders in San Diego. The region’s first military-to-infrastructure trades pipeline. The initiative aims to connect 300 transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses with career opportunities.

Ready to turn your service into a skilled trades career? Start here:
1. List your strengths: troubleshooting, safety, equipment maintenance, logistics, and team leadership.
2. Explore trades that match: electrical, construction, utilities, and other infrastructure careers.
3. Translate your experience: describe your skills in civilian terms, and gather relevant licenses, certifications, and training records.
4. Ask about apprenticeships and transition programs, including entry requirements and next steps.

Skilled trades are a real, high-demand path forward, and a chance to keep serving by building what communities rely on.
