Do Bat Boxes Actually Help Keep Mosquitoes Away?

Bat houses are not magic mosquito traps, but they can be part of a healthy, wildlife-friendly yard. They give bats safe roosting habitat, support natural insect control, and help people live more comfortably alongside one of our most valuable nighttime wildlife neighbors. Got bats in your attic? 🦇
🏠 Now is the perfect time to check your home for evidence of bats. Bats can safely be excluded from buildings without a permit from April 1 to May 15. Permits are only given when human health and safety is at risk because several bat species are endangered.

The perfect combination and both so valuable!

The perfect combination and both so valuable!

This week is ! 🌙 ✨

Under this new moon, 🌑 we are celebrating the critical darkness that supports our bats. By keeping our nights dark, we help ecosystems thrive. 🌌

How you can help bats 🦇 this :

💡 Turn off unnecessary lighting to reduce pollution, allowing bats to navigate, forage, and communicate more effectively.
🔦 If you have to use outdoor lighting, choose the least disruptive option: red LEDs. Bats generally have poor sensitivity to long-wavelength red light and they do not attract insects. Amber LEDs are the next best option, or warm white lights (below 2700K) but avoid 🚫 high-intensity blue or white lights.
🗣 Help spread the word about light pollution and the importance of dark skies to bats. This week is a great excuse to talk with friends, family, neighbours, your homeowner’s association, or government representatives about why protecting our night environment is so crucial.
🤳 Become a citizen scientist and collect data about the night sky in your neighbourhood for Globe at Night: https://app.globeatnight.org/. It’s fun, easy and you’ll be helping scientists across the globe better understand the threat of light pollution to our planet.
