🚣‍♂️US Junior DSC Sculler Excels at USRowing Development Camp🚣‍♂️

DSC junior sculler Gabe turned some heads at an intensive USRowing Development Camp in Knoxville, Tennessee, this July! 💪🌊

Gabe arrived at camp with plenty of sculling experience but one big unknown: he had never rowed sweep, where each athlete rows with just one oar. With most of the camp focused on sweep rowing, Gabe was initially placed in the lower 8-person boat. 🚣

Then the national coaches saw him scull. 👀

Once they saw Gabe’s skill and boat feel on the water, things changed quickly. The coaches recognized just how strong his sculling foundation was, and before long, Gabe earned a seat in the camp’s top eight alongside some of its strongest rowers. ⭐🚣‍♂️

And he adjusted quickly. The boat feel, technical understanding, strength, and refined rowing stroke he has developed through years of sculling translated beautifully to sweep rowing, allowing him to hold his own with athletes who had far more experience rowing with one oar. 💪👏

For Gabe, the camp was an exciting opportunity to challenge himself, learn from national-level coaches, experience a new side of the sport, and see just how far his sculling skills can take him. 🌊🏆

Gabe is especially grateful to USRowing for providing a scholarship and to members of our DSC community whose additional financial support helped make the trip possible. ❤️🙏

What an experience—and what an exciting next step in Gabe’s rowing journey. Way to go, Gabe! 🎉🚣‍♂️👏

🌊 TWO DSC SCULLERS EARN NATIONAL ATTENTION

Two longtime Delta Sculling Center scullers made waves on the national stage this month, turning in some terrific performances against top coastal rowers from across the country!

Elise and Nathan competed for Next Level and for Cooper Juniors Composite, respectively, at the USRowing Beach Sprint Trials, Speed Order and National Championships in New Bedford, Massachusetts, August 7–9. Both learned to scull at DSC and have trained with us for years, and we were thrilled to see them take that experience onto the national stage.

🥈 ELISE HILL
Racing in the Inclusive Mixed Doubles competitions, Elise and her partner, John Olbrys, got off to a strong start with a second-place finish in the time trial. They followed that up by winning their knockout round and advancing to the A Final, where they raced even faster and captured an impressive second-place finish!

🚣🏻‍♂️NATHAN McDANIEL
Nathan and his partner, G. Kennedy, delivered some excitement of their own. After finishing second in the Men’s Doubles knockout round, they battled all the way to the line in the B Final, missing the win by just 0.4 seconds!

What makes these performances even more exciting is that Elise and Nathan are both relatively new to the fast-growing sport of coastal rowing. Elise is in just her second year of beach sprint competition, while Nathan is competing in his first.
For all of us at DSC, it’s incredibly rewarding to watch athletes who learned and developed their sculling skills on our Delta waters take on a new form of the sport—and succeed at the national level.

Congratulations, Elise and Nathan! We are so proud of you!

DSC High School Grad to Cox at UCLA
Recent high school graduate Aanshi will take her rowing and leadership skills to UCLA this fall, where she’ll join the Bruins as a coxswain!
A skilled sculler with DSC and an experienced leader, Aanshi was recruited during her orientation by a coach and athletes to cox the Men's club team, a new challenge in the sport she loves. Having also helped coach DSC novice scullers of all ages, she knows how to communicate, encourage, teach, and lead, all skills that will serve her well in her new role.
Coxswains are the leaders in the boat, responsible for steering, strategy, communication, motivation, and helping a crew perform at its best. We’re delighted to see Aanshi continue in the sport she knows so well while taking on an entirely new challenge.
Congratulations, Aanshi! We look forward to seeing you coxing UCLA crews at future regattas!

📚 WHAT’S YOUR “PERFECT TUBA”?
For some, it’s music.
For others, it might just be a boat, two oars and a stretch of open water. 🚣
We’re incredibly excited to welcome award-winning author and journalist, Stockton's own, Sam Quinones as a special guest at our Port City Paella Dinner on Friday, September 18.
Sam’s book, The Perfect Tuba: Forging Fulfillment from the Bass Horn, Band, and Hard Work, explores what happens when people discover something worth working for—something that requires patience, discipline, practice and perseverance, while connecting them to a community of people striving alongside them.
That message feels remarkably familiar to us at Delta Sculling Center.
Every day, we see what can happen when someone discovers their thing. For our youth, adults, veterans and adaptive athletes, sometimes that thing is sculling.
It’s learning a skill that doesn’t come easily.
Showing up again and again.
Finding confidence through hard work.
Learning from a coach or mentor who believes in you.
And discovering a community along the way.
🥘 On Friday September 18, we’ll gather around the table for incredible paella by Addy’s Paella, wine, music and conversation—and we’re honored to have Sam Quinones joining us for the evening.
Maybe the “perfect” part was never really the point.
Maybe it’s finding something worth pursuing. 💛

The quiet of the water. The rhythm of the oars. The sound of each stroke breaking the surface and the peaceful run of the boat that follows.
There’s something about sculling that allows the rest of the world to get a little quieter.
And this? This is right here in the heart of Stockton.
Just minutes from downtown, the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta offers miles of beautiful waterways where you can get outside, move your body, clear your mind, and experience our community from an entirely different perspective.
No traffic. No noise. No crowded gym.
Just the boat. The water. The rhythm. And the Delta.
🚣 Whether you’re an experienced sculler or have never picked up an oar, Delta Sculling Center can help you find your place on the water.
Come see a different side of Stockton. 💙

That mission is very much alive here in Stockton.
We believe every young person deserves the opportunity to get on the water, pick up an oar, and experience everything sculling can offer—confidence, discipline, teamwork, belonging, and possibility.

Not every kid finds their sport right away. 💙🧡
Maybe soccer wasn’t it. Maybe baseball wasn’t it. Maybe they just haven’t found the activity that makes them excited to show up.
Maybe their sport is waiting on the water. 🌊
At Delta Sculling Center, kids ages 11–18 can discover something completely different. Sculling gets them outside, keeps them active, challenges them in new ways, and gives them a team and community to belong to.
And the best part? No experience is necessary. We’ll teach them everything they need to know and provide ALL the equipment they need!
Along the way, they’ll build confidence, independence, teamwork, focus—and maybe discover a sport they never knew was an option.
🚣 Our Fall Youth Teams are forming now!
Come see if sculling is their thing.

💙 On the Water, They Find Freedom.
At Delta Sculling Center, we believe the opportunity to experience the water should be available to everyBODY.
Our OarBusters Adaptive Sculling Program creates opportunities for people with physical, sensory, cognitive, and neurological challenges to experience the freedom, movement, connection, and joy that can come from being on the water.
With adaptive boats and equipment customized to meet individual needs—and dedicated volunteers providing support—our athletes are able to discover what they CAN do.
For some, OarBusters is an opportunity to become active in a new way. For others, it can be part of rebuilding strength and confidence following an illness, injury, or significant physical change. And for many, it’s simply a chance to get outside, connect with others, and experience the Delta from a completely different perspective.
OarBusters serves individuals with a wide range of needs and challenges, including brain injuries, MS, amputations, neurological conditions, sensory challenges, physical disabilities, and more.
But when our athletes get on the water, we don't focus on limitations.
We focus on possibilities. 💙
🌊 Come see what YOU can do.
If you or someone you know could benefit from adaptive sculling, we'd love to introduce you to OarBusters.
