White Cane Safety Day was first observed in the United States on October 15, 1964, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation recognizing the white cane as a symbol of independence for individuals with visual impairments. This observance aimed to raise awareness about the rights and mobility of people with visual disabilities. In 2014, President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation for Blind Americans Equality Day to be recognized on October 15. It is meant as a time to reflect on the progress our Nation has made in removing barriers that have prevented the full participation of blind and visually impaired persons in our society, and to reaffirm our commitment to continued steps in ensuring equality.

October 8 is World Sight Day!

It's - and a good time to remember that blindness is a spectrum.

Each person living with blindness experiences it in a different way: different levels of vision, different ways of navigating, different accommodations and tools that make it easier to live safely, independently and confidently.

So today, and every day, be kind. Don't assume. Be an ally in the .

Monica DeLeon completed her San Francisco State University Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Graduate Program internship at yesterday. CCBVI O&M instructor Walter Vela served as her master teacher. Monica volunteered with the summer youth camp in July, then returned for her internship last month.

Everyone at CCBVI wishes Monica the best of everything with her new career. The best is yet to come!
