Another incredible year at Canyon Camp is in the books!

For one hot week in July, 12 Scouts and 3 leaders from Troop 84 headed to Canyon Camp to celebrate its 90th year. The temperatures were definitely a challenge, but our Scouts never let the heat get in the way of learning, serving, and having fun. The camp staff once again did an outstanding job and made the week one to remember.

Our Scouts earned 37 merit badges and 8 partials, covering everything from Kayaking, Lifesaving, Emergency Preparedness, Camping, and Cooking to Citizenship badges, handicrafts, and science in the Nature Lodge. Several also completed the Liberty in Action 250 program, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary while learning more about our nation’s history and the responsibilities of citizenship.

One of the week’s highlights was seeing Colton, Sam, and Ian elected into the Order of the Arrow and completing their Ordeal. Spending the day in cheerful service and silence is no small task, and we couldn’t be more proud of how they represented Troop 84.

The troop also had a great showing in the camp-wide games, placing in several events and bringing home a victory in the legendary Canyon Camp Relay!

But perhaps what makes us the proudest isn’t measured by merit badges or ribbons.

For the second consecutive year, Troop 84 was honored with the Gilwell Staff award. Chosen by the Canyon Camp staff, this recognition is presented to the troop that best exemplifies the ideals and spirit of Scouting throughout the week. With so many outstanding troops attending camp each year, receiving this honor once is special. Receiving it two years in a row is a reflection of the character, kindness, leadership, and Scout Spirit demonstrated by these young men.

To our Scouts: thank you for representing Troop 84 and the Platteville community with integrity and enthusiasm. To our parents: thank you for trusting us with your sons and supporting the Scouting journey. And to the Canyon Camp staff: thank you for making the 90th year of camp one these Scouts will remember for a lifetime.

Here’s to another great year of adventure!

Tonight’s meeting was our 2nd Annual Chow Challenge! 🍳🔥

The troop split into patrols, planned a menu, and cooked dinner for everyone. On the menu:

🥞 Cinnamon Pancakes Redemption (if you know, you know 😉) and eggs
🌭 Brats with seasoned cubed potatoes
🥧 Apple and cherry cobbler cooked in Dutch ovens
🥤 Hawaiian Punch

Needless to say, nobody went home hungry! It was a great evening of teamwork, cooking, and having fun together.

Ten days. More than 1,000 miles by rail. Seven days on the trail. Nearly 50 miles on foot.

Our Troop 84 Philmont crew is home.

This adventure took us from the rolling hills of southwest Wisconsin to the mountains of northern New Mexico, where six Scouts and four adult advisors challenged themselves at one of Scouting’s premier high-adventure bases.

Along the way, the crew climbed mountain passes, crossed rugged canyons, built trail during a conservation service project, climbed spar poles using traditional logging techniques, visited historic backcountry camps, and reached the summit of the iconic Tooth of Time. Every Scout carried 40 to 60 pounds of gear, prepared meals, set up camp each night, and relied on one another to meet the challenges of the trail.

But Philmont isn’t measured in miles. It’s measured in confidence gained, leadership developed, friendships strengthened, and the realization that difficult goals can be achieved one step at a time.

As advisors, we couldn’t be more proud of this crew. They represented Troop 84 with character, perseverance, and teamwork from the moment we boarded the train until we returned home.

We’ve included some of our favorite photos from the trip below, and for those who want to follow the entire adventure, we’ve also shared a link to our full photo album with more than 400 pictures.

Thank you to everyone who supported this journey, encouraged these Scouts, and helped make this once-in-a-lifetime adventure possible.

This past weekend of few of us had the privilege of helping out the local Elks Lodge with their Flag Day program. Flag Day is to commemorates the adoption of the American flag on June 14, 1777, by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Fun fact, the creation of Flag Day was by a school teacher in Wisconsin in 1885!

And we’re off.

Today our crew heads to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for an adventure we’ve been preparing for over many months. Packs are loaded, gear is checked, and now it’s time to put the miles behind us.

Over the next several days we’ll be hiking through the mountains, learning, leading, solving problems, and making memories that will last a lifetime. Opportunities like this are one of the many reasons Scouting continues to have such a positive impact on young people.

A huge thank you to the families, leaders, and supporters who helped make this trip possible.

See you on the other side of the trail.

Our Philmont crew wrapped up another prep hike this weekend at Governor Dodge State Park, with a stop at beautiful Stephens Falls.

Not everyone made it into the photo, but the crew is ready and excited to head west next week. As a bonus, we got to witness a marriage proposal at the falls and join in the applause. Congratulations to the happy couple! Looking back, we probably should have given them a proper Scout cheer.

Next stop: Philmont!

Today we had the honor of participating in the Platteville Memorial Day Program as we remembered and honored the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

We were proud to take part alongside Troop 82 and Pack 89. A special thank you as well to Wisconsin U.S.Senator Tammy Baldwin, who attended today’s program and is pictured here with our scouts. Also pictured is Terry Woolf, a veteran and longtime leader in Platteville scouting.

Thank you to all who helped make today’s program meaningful for our community.
