The CALTCM WAVE: May2026 Issue Part II
Certification, Clinical Pearls & What’s Ahead

The Ides of May are upon us, and the deadline for longtime medical directors to achieve their CMD certification is a little more than six months away. In this issue of the WAVE, CALTCM Executive Director Barbara Hulz answers some questions about getting the required certification achieved. One great way to get CMD credits is by attending our Leadership and Management in Geriatrics (LMG) course on June 12-13 in Carlsbad. Then, Dr. Gieseke recaps the 2025-26 respiratory illness season and reminds us that despite increasing resistance, oseltamivir prophylaxis for influenza A outbreaks still likely prevents serious illness and hospitalization in skilled nursing facilities. Be on the lookout in our next WAVE for more detail on human metapneumovirus (hMPV), which has been causing more respiratory illness in our care settings. Until then, we hope you are riding the WAVE of a beautiful spring in California!
