Been a busy day in rescue world! Spring shedding season is officially here. 🐾🤣 Anyone need to stuff a pillow? We have plenty of husky glitter available!

Anyhowl, don't forget it's $5 Friday, and every little bit helps keep the huskies happy, healthy, and spoiled just enough.

With Locomotive in charge of inventory and Nikita serving as Head Treat Safety Inspector, life around here has been a little chaotic. Locomotive insists we're critically low on double treat bones, while Nikita immediately files a complaint claiming they're not healthy enough. Meanwhile, I'm stuck in the middle trying to negotiate peace treaties between the departments. 😂

The reality is that donations help provide food, veterinary care, heartworm prevention, flea and tick medications, treats, and all the daily necessities our rescue dogs need while waiting for their forever homes.

Rescue is not just posting cute pictures of dogs and watching them leave for amazing homes. Rescue is heartbreak, exhaustion, sacrifice, and carrying the weight of lives that depend on you every single day. 🐾

People do not always see the sleepless nights, the emergency vet bills paid from our own pockets, the tears after difficult calls, or the emotional toll of hearing about dogs abandoned, abused, neglected, or facing euthanasia. We are unpaid volunteers trying to hold together something much bigger than ourselves, simply because we love these huskies and believe they deserve a chance.

Sadly, rescue burnout is very real. Some people in rescue become so overwhelmed by the constant emotional strain that they lose themselves in it completely. That is why boundaries are not selfish. They are necessary. I made a promise to my bestfriend, and experienced rescue sister Angela Duff, that I would not be that person. I plan on always keeping that promise to her.

Buckeye Husky Rescue and Rehome has to have open hours and closed hours. I have to start being strict with these hours. We have to step away at times to sleep, spend time with family, work our jobs, decompress emotionally, and simply breathe. If we do not protect our mental health, we cannot continue helping the dogs who need us tomorrow.

Please understand that when messages are not answered instantly, or when we say we are full, it is not because we do not care. It is because we are human beings doing the very best we can with the time, space, money, and emotional strength we have left.

Our reward has never been money. Our reward is seeing a scared husky finally feel safe, a neglected dog finally feel loved, and watching them leave for a forever home where they can finally just be a dog again. That is what keeps us going. These rescues keep me smiling!❤️🐺

Let me start by saying this: I am STILL a growing boy. Apparently this woman says I need to gain another 25 to 30 pounds. Well excuse me for taking my eating career seriously! When dinner hits the bowl, it becomes a competitive sport. Olympic level scarfing. Gold medal gobbling.

Now SHE claims I bit the inside of my cheek because I eat like a furry vacuum cleaner with four-wheel drive. So what does she do? Violates my constitutional husky rights by sentencing me to... a SLOW FEEDER BOWL. 😒

Have you ever tried eating kibble through a plastic maze designed by tiny evil geniuses? By the time I get three bites out, I’m pretty sure breakfast is almost over. Apparently I’m supposed to “slow down” while also gaining weight. The math ain’t mathin’, Momma.

Anyhowl… I wanted everyone to know I’m feeling much better today, looking much better today, and I appreciate all the prayers, love, and concern you sent my way. ❤️🐾

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have important business to attend to… like staring at the food container and pretending I’ve never eaten before in my entire life.

My name is Nikita. I’m 8 years old, and I just completed my very first 20 hour shift as a professional semi truck security dog. 🚛🐾

Now listen here... I take my duties VERY seriously. Every snack within reach was placed under immediate investigation. Chips? Inspected. Beef jerky? Cleared. Cookies? Needed several additional taste tests for “safety purposes.” I simply could not risk my new human becoming ill from suspicious road food. That would be irresponsible.

I also monitored the truck for squirrels, maintained strict cuddle compliance during rest breaks, and supervised fueling operations from the passenger window like a furry DOT officer.

After careful review, I can confirm: The junk food has received my official Paw of Approval™️. 🐾

This is Officer Nikita, signing out for the day. 10-4 good buddies. Keep the shiny side up and the treats within reach. 🚛❤️🐺

For those that do not know, my hubby and I both drive semi trucks, and all of the dogs take turns going on the road with us. 🐾🚛

I probably made a huge mistake last night. In my defense though, hubby didn’t get any sleep Monday night. Ms. Nikita raised absolute cane after I left for work Monday. She was jumping up on the kennels trying to look out the window to see where I went. Even after bedtime, she kept barking and howling. And what happens when one husky starts singing the song of their people? The whole choir joins in. 😭🎶

So yesterday, after I went home to check on Locomotive, I told hubby I would take Nikita with me so he could finally get some sleep. And honestly… as you can see, she was perfectly happy. She crawled right up in bed beside me and slept all night long. 🥹♥️

Now, I did have to leash her to the passenger door when I stopped for fuel, because apparently she believed fueling up was now a team activity. And no, I didn’t bring another dog, because I cannot referee jealous husky drama while driving a semi if something unexpected happens. 😅

This is definitely not the usual way we would let a dog decompress, especially one that just spent a month in a shelter. But Nikita is truly terrified that I’m not coming back for her. Last night, I think she just needed to finally feel safe enough to sleep. Honestly, all three of us probably did. 🐾♥️🥱

Mr. Locomotive somehow managed to bite the inside of his cheek! They gave him a antibiotic, and a pill for pain and swelling. They cleaned the matter off of his eye also. He looks much better! We now have a muzzle for him unfortunately, so I can safely keep his eye cleaned out. Thanks for the prayers and donations! 🚂🐾♥️🙏🚂

We are unsure what is going on, and I will be calling Dr. Noll as soon as they open this morning. Yesterday afternoon he had a little swelling in his cheek, and by 11pm it had turned into this. Seeing one of our rescue babies like this is scary, and unexpected vet bills can hit hard and fast.

Our rescue walk yesterday out of Franklin County shelter. Nikita was more then ready to go!
Below is more information on Nikita, and why we commited to rescue her!

Update 5/11: Great News - Nikita has a rescue commitment!

🟣😢NIKITA is AT RISK FOR EUTHANASIA at the Franklin County Dog Shelter in Columbus, OH, for STRESS and ANXIETY!😢🟣

🟩SHE needs a dedicated FOSTER/ADOPTER and RESCUE COMMITMENT by 5 pm on MONDAY 5/11!🟩

💜This beautiful 8-year-old Siberian Husky mix is spayed and weighs appproximately 60 lbs.💜

🔘 NIKITA’S STORY: 🔘

♻️♻️😭 NIKITA has found herself BACK AT the shelter for a SECOND TIME! 😭♻️♻️ She was originally surrendered to the shelter on 9/30/2024 due to experiencing homelessness. NIKITA’s owners at that time said she was housebroken, crate trained, lived with dogs and cats and did well, but did show some separation anxiety. They reported that they got her from a home that may have been not so nice to her and that she is scared of new people. The former owners also claimed that she did well with kids and is a wonderful dog. ✅️However, given her current anxiety levels, it is recommended that she go to a calm home with older and respectful children.✅️

🟪After going on a sleepover through the shelter, she was adopted again on 1/02/2025. Unfortunately, now her owner has passed away. SO, NIKITA was returned to the shelter just a short time ago on 4/27/26. No new information was presented when she was surrendered.🟪

🔘THINGS WE DO KNOW ABOUT NIKITA:🔘

✅️NIKITA does know tricks, is housebroken, and is crate trained. She especially loves TOYS — crinkly squeaky ones are her favorite!✅️

🫟NIKITA can be nervous when meeting new people and she does not like being handled by the vet staff. Even during her first stay at the shelter, she did not do well with handling in medical and had to be sedated for certain medical procedures.🫟

🟢🐾She was most recently tested with a medium sized male on 4/29/26. She approached with a loose body and fast tail wags. The other dog jumped towards her, and she tensed up and growled. She was pulled away and then she gave a play bow, had a loose body, fast tail wags, and approached the other dog again. She gave some growls and small snaps when the other dog jumped on her. 🐾🟢

🔳🔳NIKITA may do well with other dogs, particularly RESPECTFUL companions who MATCH HER ENERGY (Calm) and understand her boundaries. DECOMPRESSION AND SLOW introductions to other dogs and cats are always recommended.🔳🔳
