VINE Sanctuary

VINE Sanctuary LGBTQ-led farmed animal sanctuary. Follow for news & views from our fabulous multispecies community!

VINE Sanctuary offers refuge to animals who have escaped or been rescued from the meat, dairy and egg industries or other hurtful circumstances, such as cockfighting, pigeon racing, vivisection, and zoos. Sanctuary residents include chickens, cows, pigeons, ducks, doves, geese, sheep, peacocks, emus, guineafowl, and one exceptional pig. In addition to sheltering and advocating for animals, we cond

uct research and education aimed at creating systemic changes in agriculture, trade, and consumption as well as human attitudes about animals and the environment. We work within an ecofeminist understanding of the interconnection of all life and the intersection of all forms of oppression. Thus we welcome and work to facilitate alliances among animal, environmental, and social justice activists. Our sanctuary was the first to figure out how to rehabilitate roosters used in cockfighting and continues to both shelter and advocate for these birds. We were founded and are predominantly staffed by LGBTQ people and have taken a leading role in the effort to understand the connections among speciesism, sexism, and homophobia. Cows are descendants of the extinct aurochs, whose habitats were temperate forested areas of Eurasia. Perhaps that's why they prefer forests to fields and are most relaxed, like Rosie here, when resting under the trees. Weather permitting, they almost always choose to bed down for the night in the woods rather than in one of the barns.

Ms B liberated herself from we-don't-know-where in 2017, living in a hilly forest for some months until some neighbors opened their barn to her. When they became unable to care for her, she came here. She's mellow, friendly to cows, and utterly indifferent to humans. Shout-out to the people who first sheltered her and to the donors who make it possible for us to care for her and her herd-mates!
