Recovery can include faith, 12-step programs, medication, harm reduction, community, family, and finding new ways to have fun and build a meaningful life.

In this episode of the Better Life in Recovery Podcast, we talk about multiple pathways to recovery and why we should celebrate every positive step toward a better life.

Finding the right recovery housing can make a huge difference in someone's recovery journey. But how do you know if a recovery house is safe, reputable, and truly focused on helping people build a better life?

In this episode of the Movement Podcast, David Stoecker sits down with Alon Fisch, founder of New Beginning Sanctuary, to talk about what quality recovery housing really looks like.

They discuss:

🏠 What NARR certification means
🔍 How to research a recovery house before moving in
🤝 Why accountability and responsibility are essential in recovery
💰 The truth about the cost of operating recovery housing
❤️ Why collaboration—not competition—is so important in the recovery community
🐾 What it really takes to create a safe, supportive environment where people can grow

Whether you're in recovery, looking for recovery, supporting someone with a substance use disorder, or working in the mental health or recovery field, this is an important conversation.

Recovery is more than just having a place to live. It's about finding the right environment, support, accountability, and community to help you build a better life.

Sometimes the hardest part of recovery isn’t letting go of the substance—it’s learning how to stop letting **other people control our emotions, choices, and recovery.**

In this episode of the Better Life in Recovery Podcast, David and Josh dive into the Second Agreement from *The Four Agreements*:

**Don’t Take Anything Personally.**

What if the anger, criticism, jealousy, or hurtful words someone directs at you are really a reflection of **what’s happening inside of them—not who you are?**

They talk about how taking things personally can give other people control over us, how the labels we hear can become part of our identity, and why we can’t allow someone else’s actions to become an excuse to return to chaotic drug use.

One of the biggest takeaways:

**Someone else’s choices don’t have to control your choices.**

If you’re in recovery, looking for recovery, supporting someone you love, or working in the recovery and mental health field, this conversation is worth a listen.

**Before you trust a treatment center with someone you love... watch this.**

When a family is desperate for help, it's easy to believe the first person who promises hope. Unfortunately, not everyone in the addiction treatment industry has a person's best interests at heart.

In this episode, we discuss how to recognize the warning signs of unethical treatment marketing, body brokering, and rehab scams—and the questions every family should ask before choosing a treatment program.

We also share what truly quality, evidence-based care looks like and why transparency matters.

If you've ever searched for treatment for yourself or someone you love, this conversation could save you from making an expensive—and potentially dangerous—mistake.

What if the words you say to yourself are either helping your recovery...or holding you back?

In this week's Better Life in Recovery Podcast, we dive into the first agreement from The Four Agreements: "Be Impeccable With Your Word."

We talk about:
✅ Breaking free from negative self-talk
✅ Letting go of shame
✅ Speaking truth instead of fear
✅ How our words shape our recovery and our relationships

Whether you're in recovery, love someone who is, or work in the recovery or mental health field, this conversation offers practical encouragement and hope.

Recovery isn't just about putting down drugs or alcohol—it's about changing the way we see ourselves.

In this episode of the Better Life in Recovery podcast, David and Josh discuss **The Four Agreements** and how these simple but powerful principles can help us break free from shame, guilt, unrealistic expectations, and the stories we've believed about ourselves for years.

Whether you're in recovery, supporting someone you love, or work in the behavioral health field, this conversation is full of practical wisdom and hope.

💙 Recovery is not about perfection.
💙 Recovery is about progress.
💙 Recovery is about discovering your worth.

**"I never thought it would be me."**

That's one of the most powerful moments in this week's Better Life in Recovery Podcast.

Lauren shares her incredible journey from addiction, homelessness, abusive relationships, and prison to becoming a Certified Peer Specialist helping others find hope and healing.

In this honest conversation, we tackle questions many people are afraid to ask:

💙 Why do people start using drugs?
💙 What finally makes someone decide to quit?
💙 How does trauma affect addiction?
💙 What helps someone stay in recovery?
💙 What can parents do if they're worried about their child?

Whether you're in recovery, love someone who is, or work in the recovery or mental health field, Lauren's story is a reminder that **no one is beyond hope** and that recovery is possible.

One of my favorite quotes from the episode:

*"Just because you don't expect it doesn't mean it can't happen. And just because you don't know how doesn't mean you won't soon. Reach out. Tell somebody."*
