Summer Festival Of The Arts (SFOA) is an arts education nonprofit on Mount Desert Island, ME, featuring both summer and winter arts intensive experiences for youth ages 5-16. Established over forty years ago, Summer Festival of the Arts - SFOA - on Mount Desert Island offers a three-week arts experience for young people entering grades 1 through 11. SFOA is an all-arts intensive festival offering

classes in the visual arts, traditional crafts, music, dance, creative writing, theater, filmmaking and more. Most of our students live on Mount Desert Island year-round, but we also have many summer visitors from across the state of Maine and beyond. SFOA encourages community and cooperation among all of its students and their families, our teachers and staff, and the public. The three weeks culminate in a weekend-long Grand Finale that provides the participants an opportunity to perform, present or display their creativity. SFOA is a non-profit organization supported by tuition and donations from generous individuals, local businesses and foundations.

Weslea is phenomenal on so many levels!

For our final entry honoring National Poetry Month, we celebrate Weslea Sidon of Tremont and Christian Barter of Bar Harbor. Poems from each are posted in the comments.

Weslea Sidon is a poet and musician who lives on MDI in Seal Cove. Her poems have appeared in several anthologies and literary magazines, including "Paumonok, Poems and Pictures of Long Island," and "Still on the Island," as well as "Two With Water," "Wolf Moon," and "Off the Coast Food Issue: Tongue & Taste." She also wrote a regular column for Face Magazine. Weslea teaches guitar and has taught poetry and creative writing to children at Summer Festival of the Arts since 1989. She was awarded the Martin Dibner Fellowship in Poetry in 2002. "The Fool Sings," her first full-length book, was released by Rain Chain Press in 2014.

A familiar face on the trails of Mount Desert Island, Christian Barter is a trail crew supervisor and a former Poet Laureate of Acadia National Park. His work has earned honors like the Isabella Gardner Prize, Maine Literary Award for Poetry, and a Hodder Fellowship from Princeton. HIs poetry has appeared in Ploughshares, Georgia Review, The American Scholar, Epoch and other magazines. Whether he’s constructing hiking paths or crafting award-winning collections including "The Singers I Prefer," "In Someone Else’s House" and "Bye-bye Land" his poetry reflects the rugged, thoughtful beauty of the Maine landscape.
