A few very full days in Malaysia — training, reconnecting, learning, and thinking about what comes next.

In Kuala Lumpur, we trained a new cohort in Stronger Together with our partners Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia , working with people with lived experience to build the skills and confidence to provide structured peer support to others affected by cancer. There is something particularly powerful about watching a group move through the training — from reflecting on their own experience to learning how to use that experience thoughtfully in support of someone else.

I also had the chance to spend time with colleagues in Kuching, continuing conversations about strengthening peer support and people-centered cancer care in East Malaysia, and exploring what future collaboration could look like.

These visits are always about much more than delivering a training. They’re about listening to what is needed locally, learning from the people doing the work, strengthening relationships, and making sure what we build is grounded in the communities where it will live.

I’ll be back in Kuching next month for APOPC, when I’ll be speaking about meaningful engagement and centering lived experience in cancer policy. This visit has given me even more to think about before then.

Grateful, as always, for the warmth and generosity of our colleagues and partners in Malaysia — and for the people with lived experience who shared so much of themselves with us.

Global Focus on Cancer is proud to have contributed to this landmark report through expert review, leadership in the global consultation that informed the Joint Statement of Cancer Care Priorities, and contributions to the report itself, including the section on peer-to-peer support.

For more than a decade, GFC has worked alongside partners around the world to advance people-centered cancer care, champion the meaningful engagement of people with lived experience, and build the evidence for peer support as an integral component of comprehensive cancer care.

We are especially encouraged to see two priorities reflected in the report: the recommendation to include people with lived experience in all cancer-related decision-making, and the recognition of peer-to-peer support as an evidence-based approach that complements formal health services. These principles have been at the heart of GFC’s work since our founding.

We are deeply grateful to the World Health Organization and to the many colleagues, partners, advocates, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and people with lived experience who contributed their expertise to this important work.

Together, we now have an opportunity to turn these recommendations into meaningful action, ensuring that every person affected by cancer has access to more equitable, more compassionate, and more people-centered care.

Our founder, Carolyn Taylor, was honored to represent Global Focus on Cancer at the IARC 60th Anniversary Conference, including participation in the Women, Power and Cancer session supported by The Lancet Oncology.

In addition to presenting, GFC shared posters highlighting our work in peer-to-peer support, meaningful engagement of people with lived experience, and a sub-analysis of National Cancer Control Plans exploring the integration of people-centered care within cancer policy and planning.

The conference created an important space for sharing research, ideas, and perspectives from colleagues and advocates around the world working toward more equitable and compassionate cancer care.

At a time when global collaboration matters more than ever, these opportunities to learn from one another, strengthen partnerships, and build community across countries and disciplines feel deeply meaningful.

Grateful for the conversations, collaborations, and friendships — and for all those continuing to move this work forward together. 💛

Grateful to the team at and our partners at International Cancer Control Partnership for an engaging and thoughtful Cancer Planners Forum.

Honored to have our Founder/Executive Director share her reflections on meaningful engagement and the role relationships, trust, and shared ownership play in strengthening cancer control planning and implementation.

One of the best parts of these meetings is always the opportunity to hear different perspectives, learn from colleagues working in diverse settings, and make new connections and friendships across the global cancer community.

We say people-centered care matters.
But when you look at how it’s defined and measured—something is missing.

Proud to share our latest paper from Global Focus on Cancer, published in ecancer.

Across LMICs, we found:
• Inconsistent definitions
• A focus on systems, not people
• Little accountability for lived experience

So the question isn’t whether we believe in people-centered care.
It’s whether we’re building systems that reflect it.

Because if lived experience isn’t measured, it isn’t shaping care.
