According to CNN, russia struck two public buses in Kramatorsk, Donetsk – one of UAI’s sister cities – killing at least 33 people and injuring 18.
Tonight, families there are grieving loved ones who were simply trying to get home.

This was the deadliest single attack on civilians of 2026 anywhere in Ukraine.
But the cruelty didn't end with the initial strike.
As medics rushed to help the wounded, russian drones targeted them at the scene.
In Donetsk Oblast, emergency crews answer calls knowing they themselves will come under fire – and still, every day, they go.
And every day, first responders are targeted.

But they can't keep answering the call without vehicles. They need more ambulances.

UAI works closely with the Donetsk regional administration to support its emergency response.

Ukraine Aid International facilitated a meeting in Washington, D.C., between the Donetsk Oblast senior leaders' delegation and Denys Senik, Ukraine’s Chargé d’Affaires in the United States.

The discussion focused on frontline communities' needs: evacuation, support for displaced families, and keeping essential services running. 
Participants also discussed strengthening direct ties with American partners and continuing cooperation with the Ukrainian Embassy.

For UAI and our Co-founder Marshall Mayer, helping local leaders bring these needs directly to partners is part of a long-term commitment to Donetsk Oblast. 
Through our city and state partnerships, we connect Ukrainian communities with American supporters, turning solidarity into sustained, practical assistance.

UAI’s sister-city network began with Westport (Connecticut) and Lyman (Ukraine).
That first partnership laid the groundwork for a wider network connecting communities across Connecticut and Ukraine.

During the visit to Westport, senior representatives of Donetsk Oblast met with local partners and joined an evening gathering with U.S.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, Connecticut State Representative Jennifer Leeper, local officials, and UAI donors and partners.

People who have supported Ukrainian communities for years heard directly from their representatives about life near the frontlines, today’s humanitarian needs, and priorities for continued cooperation.

These direct conversations are central to UAI’s work.
They connect American supporters with Ukrainian community leaders, helping keep long-term support grounded in the needs of the people it serves.

During the Donetsk Oblast delegation’s visit to Westport, community leaders met with town officials and members of the local Rotary Club to discuss the situation in Lyman and opportunities to deepen direct cooperation between Connecticut and Donetsk Oblast.

The conversation focused on the needs of people who have lost their homes or been forced to evacuate because of the war.
The delegation also thanked Westport for humanitarian assistance and donated equipment that has supported emergency response, recovery after Russian attacks, and efforts to protect civilians.

The delegation shared greetings from the Rotary Club of Sloviansk and Anatolii Levit, who has supported residents of the region for many years.
Together, participants explored opportunities for direct cooperation between Rotary members in Connecticut and Donetsk Oblast, as well as future joint humanitarian initiatives.

During the meeting, Oleksii Vorobiov, Head of the Siversk City Military Administration, presented an award to Ukraine Aid International Co-Founder and Executive Director Marshall Mayer, recognizing UAI’s years of support for Donetsk Oblast and its work building direct partnerships between Ukrainian and Connecticut communities.

Westport and Lyman have been connected since 2022 – the partnership that helped lay the foundation for UAI’s broader Sister Cities model, turning community-to-community solidarity into practical, long-term support.
