What We Do at the WCC
• Nurturing wolves,
• Educating adults and children about their importance and plight, and
• Mobilizing support and advocating for these species which cannot speak for themselves. Nurturing the Wolves
We are home for 41 wolves (as of November 2020), most of them kept off exhibit with the goal of one day releasing them into their wild ancestral landscapes. We are the preeminen

t facility in the eastern United States for the captive breeding and pre-release of endangered wolf species. The WCC participates in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) and Recovery Plan for the Mexican gray wolf and the red wolf, which are among the rarest mammals in North America. Under the aegis of the Endangered Species Act, reintroduction efforts in the past decade have established small, wild populations of about 7 known red wolves and 163 Mexican grays. To-date, five wolves from the Center have been given this extraordinary opportunity. Educating the People
We teach about 40,000 people a year, mostly kids, about the importance of these predators and their impact on our lands, waters and culture. Our Ambassador Wolves and other programs reach people both at our 32-acre facility in South Salem, NY, and in schools, museums, libraries and nature centers throughout the Northeast. Our wolves aid our students in understanding the importance of their wild counterparts by allowing unprecedented personal interaction. The WCC’s newly developed interdisciplinary curriculum in wolf education will deepen the educational experience the Center can provide and expands the organization’s geographic reach. Mobilizing Support

Our over a million supporters are guided and directed to make their voices heard on the numerous issues that continue to effect wolves in the wild. We believe every individual has the ability and responsibility to affect the world, as well as a voice (and the right to use it) to safeguard the future for generations to come. We’re able to engage with a vast number of learners and supporters through our robust social media effort. Consistent, professional effort has resulted in a robust audience following our work here on Facebook where they are alerted to ways they can help save wolves locally and across North America, communicate effectively with their elected representatives, encourage personal responsibility for improved human stewardship of our World.

Trigger warning: extreme animal cruelty and abuse

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is investigating a graphic video where an alleged Wyoming man tortures a seemingly wounded coyote. The video shows a man grabbing the coyote by their tail and then tossing, kicking, stabbing, and taunting the animal.

There should be ZERO tolerance for animal cruelty, but this isn't the first time we've heard of horrific and revolting violence towards wildlife in Wyoming. In 2024, a Wyoming man ran a wolf over with a snowmobile before taking the wolf to a bar and eventually shooting them.

In WY, coyotes and wolves are classified as predators, meaning they can be killed in virtually any way imaginable. This classification only perpetuates the idea that these sentient animals don't matter - but they do.

After years of unfounded claims that Mexican gray wolves threaten local economies and public safety, federal data has proven otherwise.

Contrary to the falsehoods spread in the Southwest, there has never been a documented case of a Mexican wolf attacking or killing a human, and wolves don't harm local economies.

In Catron County (NM), for example, data show a declining rate of livestock deaths even as the state's wolf population continues to grow. This trend is mirrored across the Mexican wolf’s recovery area.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average non-predator yearly death rate for calves is around 6%, far higher than losses attributed to wolves.

The evidence is clear - Mexican gray wolves are not the threat they've long been made out to be.

"It’s unfair to point the finger at wolves, especially because it’s a species that roamed the West long before the modern-day sprawl of cities, ranches, and farmland.

For years, ranchers have butted heads with conservationists and the federal government – claiming that the endangered Mexican gray wolf is a serious threat to their local economies and public safety.

🚨British Columbia is quietly moving to renew the taxpaper-funded wolf-kill program to continue killing wolves from helicopters for another 5 years.

What began in 2015 as a “short-term experiment” to aid caribou recovery in British Columbia has become a decade-long program that has resulted in more than 2,500 wolves being shot from helicopters.

No public consultation is planned, despite the province’s 2021 public engagement survey that found that 59 percent of respondents opposed killing wolves.

Although the wider public is not being consulted, the province’s caribou recovery team is accepting feedback from selected organizations until June 15.

📣Take action and email the B.C. Premier, Minister Neill and the Caribou Recovery Team to oppose their plan: https://wolfawareness.good.do/BCwolfkill/emailEby/

As the permits for last winter’s wolf killings have expired, the province is quietly moving to renew the taxpayer-funded program for another five years.

🚨Michigan State Representative Dave Prestin, recently introduced HB 6008, which would require the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to establish a wolf hunting season within 90 days of gray wolves being removed from the federal Endangered Species List. The bill capitalizes on fear and misinformation, and would allow wolves to be killed for trophy.

Michigan residents, please contact your state representative and urge them to OPPOSE HB 6008. There’s no justification for a wolf hunt, it's just killing for sport.
