We took advantage of the amazing fall weather last week for some site visits and project development. We visited this year’s habitat restoration sites in the GMNF (which are looking great), and potential locations for work in 2027. In the lower White, we visited a new project site where we will work to remove another old dam.

If you find yourself in Bethel this fall, check out the new river access improvements at Peavine Park and River Street Bridge: new kiosks, signs, trails, and stone steps to the water’s edge. Thanks to our partners at the Town of Bethel, Bethel Conservation Commission, Vermont Recreational Trails Grant, and Hermit Woods Trailsbuilders for helping us improve recreational access to the White River in Bethel!

A few pictures of our restoration project on the National Forest in early September. 7 structures installed are performing as designed. This project employed several lo-fi “process-based restoration” practices to capture sediment, reconnect floodplain, and improve habitat. Thanks to the GMNF, Intervale Conservation Nursery , Greater Upper Valley TU , and Maine Community Foundation.

The WRP is seeking interested volunteers to help us “Sweep the White” by removing trash from the White River following another busy recreation season.

Swim Smart Monitoring results for August 19, 2026, our last day of monitoring this season.

Each monitoring site is shown on the map. Just click on a site to see the data for the latest monitoring date. As some have requested, we are also including the spreadsheet format here as well.

3 of 16 sites tested exceeded the EPA bacteria standard of 235 colonies/100mL sample.

As a rule of thumb, avoid swimming or tubing in the White River during and immediately after a rain event because of increased risk of exposure to pollutants that could make you sick.

Thanks again to the volunteers who help us gather the samples this season.

Saturday, August 22: Snorkeling Outing at CCC Camp in Rochester –

Join us for an adventure under the water at the Forest Service CCC Camp property in Rochester (2924 Brandon Mountain Road). We provide the snorkels and masks (and wetsuits as needed), so you can see all of the aquatic species thriving in a habitat restoration project area on the White River’s West Branch.

Outing is limited to 25 attendees on a first come, first served basis –

The Royalton Historical Society will be hosting a talk by the White River Partnership on Saturday, August 1 about the history of the former Eaton Dams on the First Branch in Royalton. The White River Partnership removed both dams in 2019 and worked with consultants to document the history of the dams and the "Mill Complex" site. The talk will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the former St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on the corner of Bridge Street and Royalton Common Road in Royalton Village.
