Agrarian Trust Learn more: agrariantrust.org Agrarian Trust's mission to support land access for next-generation farmers. In the next two decades, 400 million acres of U.S.

Agrarian Trust catalyzes support for next-generation farmers by working with communities to acquire and steward land for equitable access, cultural reconnection, regenerative agriculture, and ecological restoration. farmland will change hands, and the question of what will happen to that land when it reaches the market is crucial to the future of our food system. Just in time for this pivotal lan

d transition is a new generation of young farmers, eager to become stewards of our land and healthfully provide for their communities. However, these farmers face ever greater odds in accessing affordable and secure land tenure; the price of land in the US has skyrocketed in the past decade, and one acre of farmland is lost to development every minute. A sea of change is needed to ensure secure, affordable tenure for this new generation of land stewards in this crucial moment of intergenerational land transition. Agrarian Trust was initiated in January 2013 by farmers, farm advocates, and conservation advocates working in regenerative and sustainable agriculture, many of them farmer service providers and beginning farmers who have witnessed firsthand the formidable obstacles we face – there is great work being done to help farmers access land, but it is not enough to make the change needed. Working together for 3 days, this group came up with an initial plan of action to address the needs of service providers and next generation farmers.

Congratulations to central Virginia commons! is their board chair and “explains how putting 61 acres of land at the cross section of Duran and New Market Roads into a conservation easement protected it from development and brought down the cost of the property, making land ownership more accessible to Virginia farmers of color amid a persistent racial wealth gap and decades of Black land loss.”

NFFC enthusiastically supports the bicameral Farmland for Farmers Act (S.4391 / H.R.8531), reintroduced yesterday by Senators Cory Booker (NJ) and Bernie Sanders (VT), and Representatives Jill Tokuda (HI-02), Jim McGovern (MA-2), and Shri Thanedar (MI-13). This pivotal legislation would curtail the alarming rising trend of investment firms, pension funds, and other multinational corporations snatching up farmland across the US, often using shady and exploitative practices against food producers and local communities to do so. More than 80 national, state, and local organizations and farmer advocacy groups have endorsed the bill.

Thank you to Sen. Booker and Rep. Tokuda for championing the bill. Thank you also to Sen. Sanders, Rep. McGovern, and Rep. Thenader for co-sponsoring.

We especially want to thank our members, allies, and supporters for keeping our elected leaders accountable to the family farmers and rural communities that are most impacted by the surging costs of farmland.
