Summer camp magic in full swing this week — we “traveled” to Brazil, hunted for treasure, and filled the gym with nonstop laughter. Watching kids learn, explore, and build confidence through play is exactly why camp matters so much. These are the moments they’ll carry with them long after summer ends.

We're having a blast at Summer Camp!

This week's staycation taught us all about Brazil. We tried garlic potato chips, mangoes, and coconut candy. Our kids also had the opportunity to play basketball in the gym, create stop motion movies, and even enjoyed a visit from the Shine Orthodontics ice cream truck.

We love watching these kids learn, create, and grow every day!

Kings kept the fun rolling at Summer Camp this week. It was also the first week for Summer Camp and Reading Recovery in Little Miami, with plenty of reading, crafts, and games.

But the moment that stuck with us wasn't a game or art, or even a book. Someone noticed a student's love for pink and purple, and made sure markers, pencils, and erasers in those colors were set aside for her. At the end of the day, she told us how much she appreciated seeing her favorite colors waiting for her.

It might seem small, but it was act that showed her she was seen. That's what our programs are built on: real relationships, one kid at a time.

This week at Summer Camp, our campers stamped their passports and “traveled” all the way to Italy. From tasting new foods to creating their own vibrant Carnival masks, they had the chance to explore a culture full of color, creativity, and celebration.

One of the most meaningful parts of camp this summer has been watching how much the kids enjoy exploring a new country each week. These little “trips” give them a chance to step into a different part of the world, try things they’ve never tried before, and experience the excitement of discovery without ever leaving their own backyard. It’s a simple way to make summer feel a little bigger, a little brighter, and full of possibilities.

Week one of Summer Camp is in the books, and what a week it was.

Our campers “traveled” to Guatemala to enjoy food, crafts, and stories, engineered egg‑drop contraptions, created stop‑motion movies, and filled their days with books, creativity, and connection.

But the moment that stands out from this week is this image: a volunteer holding up a backdrop so a little girl could film her stop‑motion scene.

It may seem small, but that tiny act created the space for a child to embrace her creativity and bring her story to life. It’s a reminder that making a difference doesn’t always look big. Sometimes it looks like showing up, paying attention, and offering the small support that helps a child feel capable and brave.

Here’s to a summer filled with big magic that grows from small moments.

Summer Reading Recovery launched this week in Mason and Kings, and it’s a reminder of why this work matters.

When students get targeted phonics support during the summer, they don’t just catch up; they gain the confidence to see themselves as readers. That shift can change a child’s entire trajectory, and we’re grateful to help make it happen.

Big thank you to all of our tutors, who are providing dedicated support to these students all summer long. We could not do what we do without you.

☀️ Summer is officially underway at Joshua's Place! ☀️

What a day it was yesterday!

📚 37 students kicked off Summer Reading Recovery, strengthening reading skills that will help them succeed all summer long.

🎉 58 kids joined us for Summer Camp filled with learning, laughter, and fun.

🌎 Our first stop in "Where in the World?" was Guatemala, where students explored a new culture, sampled traditional snacks, and created colorful Alfombras.

🥚 Our IT Leadership Egg Drop Challenge was a huge success, with only TWO broken eggs in the entire group!

📖 Students also committed to our Summer Reading Challenge by pledging to read 30 minutes a day for 20 days this summer.

🍧 Popsicles, games, smiles, and memories made for an incredible first day.

But the real heroes behind all of this are our volunteers. ❤️ Their time, energy, and dedication make days like this possible. Thank you for investing in the next generation and helping create a summer these kids will never forget.

This is only the beginning, and we cannot wait to see what the rest of the summer brings!

What starts as “just community service hours” often turns into something so much bigger.

One student/volunteer recently shared how volunteering at Joshua’s Place changed the way they see serving others. Through helping at Summer Learning Camp, they discovered the impact of showing up for kids...leading crafts, helping with lessons, encouraging learning, and simply being present.

They talked about seeing kids grow in confidence, ask questions about faith, and look up to the volunteers around them. What seemed like a small act of service became a reminder that giving your time can truly change lives — including your own. ❤️

At Joshua’s Place, volunteers aren’t just filling a role. They’re building relationships, creating safe spaces, encouraging kids, and bringing hope to families in our community.
