What starts as “just community service hours” often turns into something so much bigger.

One student/volunteer recently shared how volunteering at Joshua’s Place changed the way they see serving others. Through helping at Summer Learning Camp, they discovered the impact of showing up for kids...leading crafts, helping with lessons, encouraging learning, and simply being present.

They talked about seeing kids grow in confidence, ask questions about faith, and look up to the volunteers around them. What seemed like a small act of service became a reminder that giving your time can truly change lives — including your own. ❤️

At Joshua’s Place, volunteers aren’t just filling a role. They’re building relationships, creating safe spaces, encouraging kids, and bringing hope to families in our community.

This summer, you can make a difference in a child's life by becoming a Summer Reading Recovery volunteer. Just one hour a week can help foster a lifelong love of learning and reading in a child. Our phonics tutoring program provides one-on-one support to help students sharpen their skills over the summer. It only takes one hour a week to make a difference.

Our volunteers at Summer Camp help cultivate an environment dedicated to learning, curiosity, and fun. Just a few hours a week gives kids the chance to experience new things, play fun games, and enjoy good food.

"The more I tutor, the more I look forward to my next session. By the time my second grader gets to me, he's already had a long day. But he always has a smile and a story about his family or his day to share with me.

"During our session, we home in on one or two 'fundamental rules of reading' that I hope will help him going forward. By the end of the session, I can see him applying that rule. I tell him this is what it is all about: learn one thing at a time, and someday you will have it down.

"Recently, he had an exceptional day where he seemed to jump in skill level. He will be tackling the next reading level in our next session. It was good to see him advancing. I told him he did great and that I was proud of him.

"I worked with one student on the word 'most.' It doesn't follow the rules. I told him he'd have to memorize it. We reviewed it 15 times that hour. When I told him that someday he would teach his own kids how to read that word, he thought I was crazy. But I hope it's true."

We’re looking for tutors in Kings, Mason, Little Miami, and Lebanon to help students grow in reading confidence through our Summer Reading Recovery program. You don’t have to be a teacher to make an impact. Sometimes encouragement, patience, and simply showing up can change a child’s confidence for years to come.

Last Monday, May 4, we wrapped up our final Joshua’s Place Family Story Time of the year, and it was such a special evening for our families. 💙

Our mystery reader, Angela Cowles, read We’re All Wonders, and we also shared Knight Owl, reminding our kids that even when people are different, we can always choose kindness.

Families enjoyed stories, activities, book giveaways, and drawings for two summer reading baskets. We’re so thankful for our volunteers, community partners, and families who make nights like these so meaningful. 📚
