Girls wrestling remains one of the fastest-growing high school sports in America, but girls flag football has now grown even faster. According to 2025–26 participation figures, girls flag football jumped from 15,716 athletes in 2021–22 to 102,360, a massive 551% increase.

Girls wrestling also continued its historic rise, growing from 31,654 participants to 88,771 over the same four-year span — an increase of about 180%. In just one year, participation climbed from 74,064 to 88,771, showing that the sport is still expanding at a rapid pace.

The number of high schools sponsoring girls wrestling also increased from 4,802 to 8,853, while all 50 states now report girls wrestling participation. Even with flag football growing faster, girls wrestling has firmly established itself as one of the biggest success stories in high school sports.

Wrestling for Winchell 🤼‍♂️

Together, our community raised a GRAND TOTAL OF $8,238.55 for Angie & her family. ❤️

We want to give a very special thank you to our committee, who put countless hours, thought & heart into making this event possible. Every detail, big & small, came from people who truly wanted to make a difference for Angie.

Thank you to our donors, wrestlers, volunteers, & everyone who came out to support us. And a special thank you to all of the wrestlers who volunteered their time throughout the day. Seeing our athletes step up to give back is truly something special 🐾

Here is a pretty quick overview of what wrestling is…for the newbie parents out there. Some updates to share: A takedown is now three points, back points can be awarded up to four points and penalty points are awarded too. Also….parents will spend entire Saturdays on bleachers and you’ll be proud of every wrestler who steps on that mat, whether it’s your kid or not.
