Honoring Juneteenth at the Boys & Girls Club of Somerset

Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day that commemorates freedom, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of equality. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free.

At the Boys & Girls Club of Somerset, we believe it is important to teach our young people about history not just the challenges, but also the courage, hope, and determination that helped shape our nation. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom, opportunity, and justice are values worth protecting and celebrating.

As we learn, reflect, and celebrate together, we encourage our Club members to embrace diversity, respect one another, and recognize the strength that comes from understanding our shared history.

Today, we celebrate freedom. We celebrate progress. And we continue working toward a future where every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Yesterday at the Boys & Girls Club of Somerset, our summer campers soaked up every bit of sunshine with an outdoor water day full of water balloon fights, laughter, and making the most of summer. Nothing better than seeing kids carefree, cooling off, and creating memories together. Summer at the Club is all about fun, friendship, and moments like these. ☀️💦🎈

The Boys & Girls Club of Somerset will be closed on Friday, June 19th, in observance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a time to reflect on our nation's history, celebrate freedom, and honor the ongoing pursuit of equality.

We will resume normal operating hours on the following Monday. We hope everyone has a safe and meaningful holiday. ❤️💛💚

Today was such a special day! We got to spend time with Eli Parker and dive into some improv with our younger club members. Watching them step out of their comfort zones, break into character, and light up through acting was pure joy. As we continue to provide engaging activities, educational opportunities, and meaningful experiences for our members, we are asking families to please leave tablets and other personal gaming devices at home.

While we understand that some members may need to carry a cell phone, we have noticed that tablets and personal devices are becoming a distraction from programming, activities, and social interaction. Our goal is for every member to be fully present, participate in activities, build friendships, and make the most of their time at the Club.

We appreciate your help in encouraging members to unplug and engage with the opportunities available each day at the Boys & Girls Club of Somerset.

Today our Boys & Girls Clubs of America Somerset campers took on a scavenger hunt at Rocky Hollow Recreation Area and definitely brought their A-game. Teamwork, problem-solving, and a little friendly competition made for so much fun and adventure. Safe to say these kids were on a mission and crushed it. 🍃🏃‍♀️🔍

Yesterday was the hottest day of the season so far, so we spent a few hours cooling off at the splash pad. We’re so grateful to be downtown and able to take advantage of all the amazing things our city provides for the kids.

Of course, the day came with a little adventure, too. One of our campers, Bentley, caught a crawdad in the creek and immediately decided we should cook it. So naturally… we obliged. 🤣🦞

Safe to say it was a day full of sunshine, splashing, and unforgettable camp memories. ☀️💦

☀️ We’ve spent a lot of today in the gym beating the heat, but this afternoon we headed to the splash pad for some outdoor fun and a chance to cool off! 💦 The campers had a blast splashing around and enjoying the sunshine with their friends.

We also took a little time to celebrate a very special birthday! 🐾 Tomorrow is our staff member Shelby’s service dog’s first birthday, so the campers helped make her feel extra loved with an early celebration today. She enjoyed all the attention and birthday wishes!

The last few photos are from yesterday when we partnered with Earthwise Education. A huge thank you to Alyssa Richardson for helping our campers create beautiful sun prints and learn through hands-on exploration. 🌿☀️

From splash pad adventures to science and art projects to celebrating our furry friends, it’s been another wonderful week at the Boys & Girls Club of Somerset! ❤️💙
